This is the second part of my "Essential Mr. Bones" series. For Part 1, click here.

Infinity, Inc. #22 takes place during the Crisis on Infinite Earths, when everyone was gathered by the Monitor. It's written by Roy and Dann Thomas, and illustrated by Mike Clark.

In #24, the art is by Todd McFarlane again.

In #26, the Crisis is over. Yolanda Montez, the second Wildcat, is captured by a strange shark-human hybrid known as Carcharo.

If you're wondering why it looks like Wilcat and Carcharo are speaking in Spanish and then repeating themselves in English, Roy explained it in the letters page.

Meanwhile, the other Infinitors arrive to rescue Yolanda.

The Infinitors battle Helix.

The other members of Helix are defeated as well...

In #27...

This is from Infinity, Inc. #28. The cover is by Denys Cowan.

Bones tries to make his escape, with the other Infinitors chasing after him. Bones steals Hector Hall's car ("With that costumed-up posse hot on my heels-- my only shot out is a def shot of wheels!") but on his way out he accidentally crashes into Jade and Obsidian, who are driving in.

The Infinitors plan on taking down Carcharo and Helix once and for all. They ask Wildcat if she has any ideas, but she refuses to tell them anything until they let her officially join their team. When they don't, she leaves, saying she'll find Helix on her own.

Meanwhile, Carcharo has an argument with Penny Dreadful over who should be in charge of Helix while Bones is gone (Bones left Penny in charge). Penny wants to rescue Bones, while Carcharo wants to go after Yolanda. Carcharo gets into a fight with Penny Dreadful and the other members of Helix, until Baby Boom stops everyone.

A later issue showed what the original cover for #28 looked like.

Things come to a conclusion in #29.

Wildcat finds Helix and is spying on them when she gets caught by Mr. Bones.

Kritter attacks Carcharo, who throws him through a wall. A horrified Babe thinks he's dead.

Babe goes after Carcharo, while Kritter, who had survived, helps free Wildcat. Wildcat convinces him to contact the rest of Infinity, Inc.

Meanwhile, the remaining members of Helix (Penny Dreadful, Tao Jones, and Arak) attack the superhero team, thinking they're the ones who have Bones. Sylvester Pemberton, the Star-Spangled Kid, stops the fight, telling them about the SOS he got from Wildcat explaining what happened with Carcharo (along with her connection to Helix), and the two teams agree to work together.

Wildcat comes to Bones's rescue, attacking Carcharo, and Babe blows up his giant sharks. Meanwhile, the members of Infinity, Inc. and Helix start to arrive.

Beth Chapel, Doctor Midnight, says she'll help him. Since her powers only let her see in the dark after she was blinded by an oxygen explosion in the hospital she worked at, Obsidian covers her and Bones with his shadow self.

The other members of Helix knock Babe out.

Next time: It's the trial of Mister Bones!

Ok, these guys are pretty awesome what happened to the rest? I know Bones is alive and well. Also what happened to the Infinity Inc? Lyta Hall, and others?

*braces for bad news*

What about the other members of Helix like Tao Jones and Penny Dreadful?

For Lyta specifically, read Neil Gaiman's Sandman.

The other Infinitors . . . Some of them show up occasionally. Nuklon is now Atom Smasher. This Dr. Midnight is ignored/forgotten. Obsidian is supposedly on the JSA. Jade died. Who else, who else. Oh, Hector Hall was Dr. Fate for a little while. Northwind is laying fallow, now, I think. Who else? Yolanda is forgotten/ignored, too, I think. Rick Tyler is currently exceedingly happily married to Jesse Quick. Sly Pemberton died, leaving his legacy open--Courtney Whitmore took up Star-Spangled Kid for a while, but there's been no new Skyman, despite Robinson's plans in Starman. I think that's it. Kind of a mixed bag, really.

I think Wildcat and Dr. Mid-Nite were killed by Eclipso in a 90's Crossover. Her brother briefly became Eclipso's master and joined the JSA as a form of revenge. He to died.

Northwind and the rest of his people were devolved to be even more bird-like. Was part of Black Adam's supergroup for a bit.

Kinda interesting to see the beginnings of Spawn's cape in some of those panels of Bones. I didn't really recognize much in there as McFarlane until I saw some of the cape work.

Did anyone over at Marvel get the same treatment when he was there?

I wouldn't of thought so, since one of the major defining aspects in appearance between the Marvel and DC heroes in that the former, by and large, don't wear capes. At that point in McFarlane's career, one of the few I can think of would be Dr Strange, or Gladiator of the Imperial Guard.

His version of Batman was absolutely crazy, though.

You've never seen McFarlane draw Spidey's webbing, have you.

My God, does Helix have the worst origin of any villain group ever? All their mothers were patients to an insane Gynecologist named Dr. Love, who kidnapped them after birth and raised them.

I wonder if nowadays, where Bones is the director of the Department of Metahuman affairs, if he just looks back on this point in his life, shakes his head sadly, and then reaches for the flask of whiskey he keeps in the bottom drawer of his desk.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he had the rest of the Helix killed off so no one would ever learn about his true origins.

Hey, don't knock Helix!

Maybe they're origin was lame, but the idea of a dysfunctional mutant family on the run is awesome.

I would love to see a group like this in Runaways, if only because they would probably hit it off really well.

Helix: Parents! Who needs 'em?!"

Runners: "Damned straight."

Helix is awesome.

Why didn't Helix ever get their own series?! To hell with these Infinity Inc. losers, I want to see more freaky mutant family hijinks!

That makes one of us. Roy Thomas' idea of "wacky" is very close to my idea of "fingernails on chalkboard."

So what WAS Carcharo's deal, anyway? Was he telling the truth about him and Wildcat being cousins, or was that a lie? Do we ever find out?

From: [identity profile] psychop_rex.insanejournal.com
Ah, OK. Kind of an enigmatic character, really - he shows up for like three issues, gets killed, and you never really learn what his deal is, except that he's a shark guy.
