MA:Avengers 14
Sep. 14th, 2009 03:39 pmSo the Avengers are called to a pocket dimension helping a farming tribe defend themselves from barbarians. The thing is, they realize that if they just defeat them this year, the Marauders will just regroup and try again later.

I love the characterization in MA:A. I don't think I can stress that enough. The characters are all heroic, but they're also humans too.
Also, I really do enjoy how Storm gets to be really bad ass without an overflow of T&A shots. I'm just sayin'.

And look at how Bruce Banner gets to be smart when he's not Hulking out! D'aww!

I love this Wolverine so much more than the gritty, growly one that basically goes 'snikt' and drinks beer. Perhaps I'm biased, but I don't think we'd ever get scenes like this in current 616 canon.

Okay, more Storm being awesome. She's playing a part to intimidate the enemy, but, I mean, that's still scary as all hell.

Actually, I'm only including the next page because of Spidey. Look at that outfit. Everyone else gets minor modifications to their costumes and he gets an entirely new set of clothing. Look at his little tunic! Look at his buccaneer boots!

In the end, the Avengers save the day and the tribe insists on paying them. Only they're farmers, so the Avengers come trooping home to Jarvis with three tons of rice and beans. It's a glorious page, which is why you should go buy the comic to see it!

Date: 2009-09-14 04:44 pm (UTC)If you walk into a village market and see half a dozen people in full SWAT gear fighting bad guys, you know they don't belong, and will know to keep an eye out for them. But if you see half a dozen farmers who just happen to be able to kick ass and take names, you'll be a mite more cautious of farmers in the future.

Date: 2009-09-14 07:03 pm (UTC)Something that was often said about the DCAU tie-in comics, too.
(that it was more mature than the mainline books, not that they were more mature than 616, although, by correlation, they probably were).
It was often wondered why books for so-called "immature" readers were more mature than the mainstream books.
It's because, of course, that the "mature" books were only superficially mature. Massive gibs and sex aren't truly mature. GRIMDARK themes and wangst aren't actually mature. Deconstruction and post-modernity are not mature. They LOOK mature, and often require a mature audience to handle or understand, but when you scratch the surface off, you realize they're more often than not rotten, seeping, painful, mindless, and have little place in true maturity. Whereas "kiddie" books, without the need to cater to a post-adolescent audience who is desperate to proclaim its maturity, are able to focus on what's actually mature: healthy relationships, mentorship, trust, love, fellowship, responsibility, etc. Paradoxically, it's because they "aren't mature" and can't rely on "mature themes" to shock or entice the audience that they need to rely on mature storytelling, which ends up satisfying an audience who no longer needs to declare its maturity. It is already mature. And it also shows immature still forming minds what true maturity really is.

Date: 2009-09-14 07:45 pm (UTC)I know what you mean, most of the time, I wish Marvel adventures can be the 616. I notice the civilians in MA are more like the ones in the DC universe. Actually appericiate their heroes especially Spidey, Wolvie and Hulk who they always treat like crap in the 616.
by the way Storm dialogue seem to be poking fun on the way she used to talk int he 90s cartoon when she would call out her attack.
