Four scans from Uncanny X-Men #515, in which Greg Land mostly manages to not obstruct the story.

While awaiting Land's hopefully-soon reassignment elsewhere, the best to hope for is that his work is reasonably easy to skim over without any particularly grotesque imagest to draw your attention.  This issue is surprisingly muted, I must say.

Anyway, as the new microstate of Utopia gets up and running, and Psylocke checks in on another member of the Science Team:

Psylocke interrupts a council of various senior X-Men (Cyclops, Emma Frost, Storm, Professor X, Namor) and Iceman to tell them about his death.

As Cyclops leaves for a meeting with the mayor, Professor X notes that he wasn't at his most empathetic; Cyclops is really stressed and says that empathy is at a premium at the moment.

Later...

Fraction writes a really good Beast, and, whenever things aren't getting too cluttered with characters, he can do some pretty good work here.

Aww.

I'd think his last words would have meant that he wanted to be buried there.  I have no idea who this guy is though.

Ultra-minor figure from Marvel's 1970s Godzilla comic. Fraction pulled him out of deep, deep limbo last year to be a part of this group.

Terrifying smile Psylocke to one side... (One grin like that and Doug will be digging himself a new grave to get away from it)

Who's the guy in the white suit and hat?

I like Beast's euology "May you have mercy on all the mysteries you're sure to encounter" is a great line.

Anyone else think they cremated him to minimise the chance of random resurrection? Sure, it's not perfect, but it makes it more difficult than the average burial.

Wow, it finally happened Greg Land's art killed someone. Goodbye Doctor we hardly knew thee.

Ok, now about this little meeting, i find it so amusing that Fraction puts Storm in there when we know she really isn't "there". This Storm is just a husk of what she was. There is no way the Storm that defeated Cyclops for leadership of the X-men, without any of her powers, would ever tolerate the extremes Scott has gone.

And the poor Professor is there like some geriatric parent that is being allowed to stay with his children and no longer the patriarch of his family. I am amazed at how Scott has dismissed him, while still using the X name for his own uses like X-force and this new Nation.

I cant stand how all these powerful leaders are being portrayed so poorly and given so little dialogue to give Scott and Emma as much authority as they have been given. I also fear Magneto will be given the same treatment in the following issues.

As much as Land's art annoys me, I love on the second page where Beast and everyone looks all sad and then Cyclops is all, "What do we do with the body?" and Beast's face is just like, "SHUT UP, SCOTT".

Yuriko is a girl's name. Means 'Lily Child'. It is not a name that a man would have. It's like featuring a man called 'Elizabeth'.

It's true that many Japanese names are unisex and the 'ko' ending isn't always exclusively feminine. However 'Yuriko' is pretty damn girly, as far as I know.

Took me right out of the story, that did.

They probably didn't want to bury the body because it's not that big an island..and he did want to stay. They raised a chunk of Magneto's old Asteroid M and declared it their own country, named Utopia, just outside the international border of California.

Necrosha is some event having to do with Selene the old mutant demon sorceress who feeds on death trying to ascend to godhood with her mutant followers help.

Why the heck an obscure character from the Godzilla comic is there, I've no idea, I don't read the regular series anymore.

As bad as Landlocke is here at least she has black hair and black eyes. Compare her to Land's Lady Deathstrike from some months back who looked like bloody Katie Holmes.

If there's one thing Marvel should bring back from the "good old days" its classic furred Beast, who had a human face. Enough of the cat face already.
