The Golden apples
or Loki behaving very badly

For the mods the story is 54 pages long
1
Loki got tricked to bash out at a eagle. The eagle is really a jotunn in eagle ham, the jotunn caught the stick and by magic forced Loki to hang on to the stick. The jotunn demanded that Loki swear, that he will bring him Idun with her apples, or else will he drop loki. Loki gives in and swear on that.
Note: An oath was a very big deal for the old norse, there was special hell for oath breakers

The marriage does not become a happy one. They like each other, but she wants live in the mountains and he loves the sea (he is the God of the sea).

I do recall reading of Skadi becoming very vengeful...though I can't specifically remember how.

The original version goes something like no one wanting to marry her and that's why they hid behind a screen and did the fee thing, and Njord won because, being the god of the sea, he spent all his time wading about and thus had very clean feet.

It then continues that they were never really happy together since Skadi was a godess associated with mountains and skis and Njord with the sea, and so met only occasionally.

At this point it becomes clear that the norse gods were on the very forefront of fur (and feather) suiting trend. Makes me think back to another comic that I think was done by the same person (the style was similar enough) involving Loki and a horse, now that must have been an uncomfortable morning after...

Morning, nothing. Loki gave birth to Sleipnir. Even assuming a quick pregnancy, it would probably still be a while (horses carry their young to term for eleven months.

I wonder how accurate those events are in the Marvel Chronology, because if so I'd be hard kind of hard to give Loki any respect at all...

Loki: So I hear you've spent you're entire supervillain career trying to squash one insignificant insect..

Norman: I hear you got knocked up by a horse once...

Loki: :(

Thing is, the old Viking culture and myths viewed magic and shapeshifting as being a female or at least feminine thing. A man who practiced either, or both, would be thought of as unusually feminine for a man and possibly homosexual.

Loki was an accomplished magician and shapeshifter (though he never managed to shapeshift into birds on his on, needing to borrow Freya's bird-skins in order to pull that one off), so it's not surprising that at least one myth had him get pregnant in horse form and giving birth... he was already being a "woman" by doing those things, so might as well take it to the logical extreme. He's also taken on the form of human women on several occasions.

Odin, who also practiced magic and shapeshifting, is also hinted to on occasion have spent some time as a woman, though these cases aren't very well-documented (maybe they didn't want to slander the mightiest of the gods too much?)

Frankly, the Marvel versions of the Norse gods are so far away from the original concept that I view them as different, completely unrelated, characters.

I got to check this out!

Thank you! We need more European comics-love here! The art is wonderful and the story is jam-packed with humor.

Hey, who do you trust? Me or a little human boy?

...you'd think Loki, being a trickster and all, would learn to not set himself up like that.

Seriously.

Not just here-here, either. Here America!

I mean, Tintin and Asterix and the Smurfs got cartoon adaptations released in the States. Why did Valhalla never get one? It would've been perfect for a special or saturday morning show, or something.

There was an animated Valhalla movie in the 1980s, but it was produced in Denmark. (There was also a spin-off cartoon series about the jotunn child Quark, who plays an important part in the movie, though far as I remember the gods themselves didn't appear in that one.)

It's a tradition amongst tricksters. They're their own worst enemy.

I wish more of this series was available in a language I could understand. I acquired the first five albums in Finnish many years ago, but they never translated more.

Are the later ones at least available in Swedish somewhere?

I know a bunch of them are availible in swedish, not sure how many of them.

According to wiki all 14 albums have been translated into swedish.

The animated movie isn't actually availible in sweden but can be ordered from Denmark, with swedish speech and text (!).

I (also a Finn) bought a bunch of them in Swedish from www.tradera.com (like a Swedish huuto.net). Some I had to get here (http://www.carlsen.dk/carlsen.asp?side=/butik/vare_liste_lang.asp%3Fforfatter%3D%26tegner%3D%26serietitel%3DValhalla%26genre%3) in Danish (it's quite easy to understand if you're reasonably good at Swedish) because the Swedish translations were very rare and expensive for some reason.

All are also available in Swedish at the library, at least in the Helmet network. If you don't live in/near Helsinki, you should still be able to loan them through your own library for a small price, I think. I definitely recommend it because IMO all the later books are better than the first five ones they translated, and I'm not bitter about this at all.

I could buy the newest ones in Akateeminen kirjakauppa when they had just appeared, but they don't have them stocked any more and I haven't seen them in retail anywhere else in Finland. I used to hunt them until I finally turned to my good friend the Internet.

This is excellent stuff, the realistic dialogue and cartoony art is a great match. I like the threat to carve the blood eagle on Loki, and that Thor's hammer is drawn like the old amulets.

I quibble at Loki's hair color, but his behavior is spot on.

(PS. Dunno if FullMetalOx has thanked you for pointing us at Phantom of Chinatown yet, but either way. THANKS!)

Oh, Loki, you are such a ham. I love the 'HOW COULD HE DO THIS TO YOU?!' and 'ME...' panels. It really captures the dichotomies of the character - he's sympathetic to a degree, but still absolutely untrustworthy when you get down to brass tacks.

Somehow, I can see Alfred Molina play as Thiassi.

But yeah, I've always adored Skadi, great to see that she looks hot in this comic.

I found my way in here now too, and can assure you that I am still working on the rest of the series, so you will get more Valhalla goodness.

As for the Valhalla movie, you can get it on DVD; there are even english dubs/subs.
The 2 DVD version also include all the Quark short movies, which should also have at least english dub, not sure on subs, since i dont own that DVD.

And finally, as for the story about Loki being a horse and giving birth to Sleipnir, that take place in Valhalla 14.
