When well written and acting in a Joker-ish manner, always.

I could never hear Morrison's Joker a Hamill though, which is not to say he's not well written, just not written as any take on the Joker I can properly relate to. I had the same problem with The Dark Knight movie, Heath Ledger gave a powerhouse performance as a psychopathic monster in the role, but it never really felt like the Joker to me.

This. I honestly don't like TDK all that much (repeat viewings have soured it for me utterly, I find it way too dark and cruel, personally), but there was nothing about Ledger's Joker that really correlated with the versions that have appeared in the books, especially with them saying they'd looked at everything from his original appearance to the current stuff.

To me, Ledger's Joker was more akin to Charles Manson than anything else. And in fact, the Joker's plot in TDK has an awful lot in common with Manson's 'Helter Skelter' ideas.

IMO, the big problem with Ledger's Joker wasn't Ledger's performance, it was the way he was written. That wasn't the Joker he was playing.

It was Anarky in greasepaint.

I can't really see Anarky doing anything like that. Lonnie can certainly be... adamant about his ideas, but chaos for chaos's sake has never been his style. Perhaps if he went totally nuts.

Exactly. He could pull off those shifts in tone, going from braying and maniacal to bitter or quietly menacing and back again.
