Not part of the original S_D 1.0 Spider-man/Daredevil series, I wanted to insert bits and pieces I hadn't included the first time. Turns out there was a lot more than I thought. (Lotsa scans below cut)Read more... )

As a group of colorful fellows come gunning for Iron Man and Spider-Man, Spidey provides a lecture in fight etiquette. With helpfully numbered subheadings.

You'll shoot your eye out, kid!

So today (in America; it still counts!) is the fifth anniversary of my first post to the community! I guess that makes it my scansiversary? I considering doing a reprise of that very same entry, but those scans are either a) stuff I'm no longer into or b) have been reposted multiple times. Instead I thought I'd scavenge a couple of my favorite bits from my 1.0 Mary Jane series, oh so long ago.

Behind the cut, Mary Jane and Peter's first kiss as a serious couple, way back in Conway and Andru's Amazing Spider-Man #143. Also, answers to two questions you didn't know you wanted to know about their relationship: Why does Mary Jane call Peter "tiger?" and What's Peter and MJ's song?

"Answer one question for me before I leave." )

Got it just under the wire! For North America, anyway! Nya-ha!

Y'know, back when I was but a wee fanboy, I actually used to wonder if there was any feasible way the JLA could go up against Two-Face. It seems far-fetched to say the least, but I suppose the Joker's done it several times. So imagine my delight when, a couple months ago, I discovered this story existed!

In this two-part JLA story from 1975, our favorite bisected anti-villain teams up with the JLA to save the world from aliens inhabiting statues of Julius Caesar, Ben Franklin, and Napoleon! No, really.

God, I love the Silver Age )

Some of the most interesting superhero stories occur when characters are taken out of their usual circles. Like, Ra's al Ghul being revealed as the big bad guy in a LEGION OF SUPERHEROES story! Or EMPEROR JOKER! It's a simple, engaging, and underused trope of comics. They're the kind of stories that require a bit of imagination and originality on the writer's part, which is probably why they're not done that often.

Me, I'd love to see more of characters like Two-Face being used outside of Gotham, pitted against characters who aren't part of the Bat-Family. We already got a taste of the possibilities between this and the TEEN TITANS SPOTLIGHT issue where he faced off against Cyborg. For one thing, I'm hoping that JMS actually does the Two-Face/Hawk&Dove issue of THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD that he talked about back in May 2008. That'd be a great start.

The Punisher's interactions with Spider-Man in his very first appearance...

What's interesting about this story is that, as others have pointed out, there's no indication whatsoever that the reader's meant to view the Punisher as an anti-hero instead of as another straight-up Marvel hero. There's certainly no indication that Spider-Man has a problem with his methods.

So, last month I requested stories where Jim Gordon interacted with others beyond Batman and Robin, and this month [insanejournal.com profile] mullon expanded it to heroes outside of the Batfamily. Additionally, [insanejournal.com profile] lyraeinne requested scans of Dick and Clark interacting.
Well, as Tim, in the first story I ever read with him, strove to do, I'm gonna kill two birds with one stone by posting Worlds Finest Comics #269.

Someone who has just done me a brilliant sketchcard (which you'll see soon enough, believe me it's a thing of utter beauty) mentioned he'd like to see a sample of the "Robin goes back to the circus" stories that we've posted here and on S_D 1.0, so this repost from there is for Sonny, a thoroughly nice guy who I hope will see fit to join us here if he's interested.

I know that when he was in the Titans Dick got used to be carried through the air by Starfire, but honestly....

It's a purely fun blast from the past from DC Comics Presents #31, written by Gerry Conway and drawn by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez with inks from Dick Giordano (Always a killer combination for classic DC characters) - Where Superman hoists an elephant, Robin battles a half-and-half hermaphrodite and Jimmy and Lois show why Clark really IS the brains of the Daily Planet's star trio.

A few of the scans aren't the greatest quality because it's an old, old comic now!

I moved from San Diego back to Austin this week, and have not had time to do more Legion stuff. I do like talking about art on s_d a lot, though, so I decided to just repost something from the old s_d.

Without further ado, here is issue #141 of the Spectacular Spider-Man, by Gerry Conway and Sal Buscema (although I strongly suspect the hand of Janson here).

This is an oldie that keeps coming to mind when I see Batman discussed. Ray Palmer, the Atom, wants to marry his girlfriend, Jean, but he's concerned about whether the revelation would cause her another breakdown (she's had two already). He asks his friends for advice.

Continuity: They've just defeated 5 old gods who melded together. Earth 1 and 2 are separate. Black Canary is from Earth 2, having migrated when her civilian husband was killed. Red Tornado has taken in a child. Hal Jordan has been dating Carol forever. Barry Allen tried to keep his identity secret, but Iris found out anyway. The Phantom Stranger is making his exit (for once, without someone saying, "OMG WHERE DID HE GO?").

Or: Gerry Conway and his Gender War issues!

The early Gerry Conway had some pretty good stuff. Since she's coming back as a Black Lantern, here's a look at the original Killer Frost. (Roughly 16 pages, poor dial-upper..)

I've been lurking for ages, but I can't pass up the chance to give love for my favorite Hobgoblin. Most people seem to like Rod best, but I grew up on a stack of old eighties Spider-Man comics, so the only Hobgoblin I ever knew for years was Jason Macendale. He was always my favorite villains, simply because he seemed to be full of so much more personality than the other Spidey villains, and his goals were so refreshingly mundane: power, power, power.

That, and he pulled stunts like this all the time.
