having woken to the news of the passing of the magnificent British actor John Hurt, so I thought I'd post a quick scene from the adaption of a classic UK filmed movie that he's not even in. (Look, it made sense to me at the time, but it's a Saturday morning, my logical processes aren't warmed up yet).

A reminder that there’s “homage”, “parody”, “piss take” and then, somewhere waaaay beyond those, is “How LEGO treats it’s Star Wars licence”.

From the UK "LEGO Star Wars" comic.

I've posted this one before, but it's a story that sticks with me.. because of the author, yes, but also because of the character. I got Carrie Fisher to sign my own copy a few months ago, and she struck me as a warm, and genuine person. She will definitely be missed.

"[The prequels are] a background that underlines everything in terms of motivations and psychology. You can see it running through Star Wars as a whole. Even if I hated the prequels, you can appreciate the emotional journey of the characters. Vader is Anakin but he isn't; he's not the same guy as he was twenty years ago. I did close readings of all the prequels, picking apart the details to see what was worth digging into and what makes things interesting." -- Kieron Gillen

"Vader does so little yet every line is so weighted with meaning. For me writing it, keeping that dignity is a big part of it. I don’t want to lean on thought balloons or narrators. I want to keep us a step away, and asking questions. We have suspicions, but we can’t be sure. Vader will surprise you, basically. He’s a puzzle." -- Kieron Gillen

'Nothing will be the same after this. That sounds like me in Marvel crossover mode. But really, nothing will be the same. It's kind of like, "Who can possibly survive this one?"' -- Kieron Gillen

'It was fun because ended up being a really dark take on the old "Droids" cartoon. It's like, "The Adventures of Triple Zero and Bee Tee, mainly involving murder."' -- Kieron Gillen

Awww.... (

Keiron Gillen has announced that #25 will be the end of the Darth Vader title from Marvel

Interview up at ign on the subject

It seems to be entirely the creators choice, which is cool, (and there's nothing to say that another title can't be launched with different creators)

I hope that whoever next gets their creative hands on Dr Aphra and especially BeeTee and Triple-0 treats them with as much respect!

'That's always my approach to most things in terms of, "What haven't we seen yet?" I don't like doing the same thing again and again because things kind of get boring.

'The first arc was like a quest story. The second one was essentially like a weird crime novel. The third one was "Vader Down," our big crossover action story. It was basically a Marvel-style crossover in the "Star Wars" universe. The fourth one, which we just wrapped, was, "Okay, we've seen Vader in some small scale stuff. Let's put him in the middle of a war. Let's do 'Star Wars' and underline the word 'Wars.'" So we put him in this command position and showed off how big a "Star Wars" story can be.'

"He’s stoic and operatic. You know that bit in the introduction to Dark Knight Returns which talks about how Batman doesn’t whine, and his passions are operatic, etc? That’s very much how I see Vader. Keeping his grandeur and fundamental tragedy is what drives me." -- Kieron Gillen

'I’m not that patriotic, so don’t feel any need to side with the Imperial powers. The opposite, really. However, I do feel a need to understand him and be fascinated by him. “Why do people do bad things” is one of those core things that bubble along in my writing. The sins of Empire fascinate me.' -- Kieron Gillen

"The Shu-Torun War is basically us doing a proper war comic. So far Vader has been working on a relative small scale. Shu-Torun is about getting the AT-ATs out." -- Kieron Gillen

This comes from Vader's Quest #1. It's now under the "Legends" line which basically means it was thrown out of continuity after Mickey Mouse took over but it's still a neat scene IMO.

Warning for some blood/violence.

"Bar the movies, my main influences when thinking about the series are The Godfather and House Of Cards. In other words, I’m looking for compelling, fascinating, horrifying and understandable – but not necessarily sympathetic. With all our cast, I want people to not be able to look away – and still, in it recognise something true about us as living creatures." -- Keiron Gillen

One of the questions created by the prequels is how come Darth Vader never recognized C-3PO in the original trilogy if he was the one who created him? This comic answers that question.

"Generally speaking, me doing a Darth Vader book is something that does make a worrying amount of sense. One of the more common critiques of my Superhero work is always that I spend too much time with the bad guys. Well, here, this isn’t a problem." -- Kieron Gillen
