Sex, Violence, and Superheroes

'Aren’t most superhero comics basically pornography with fight scenes instead of sex scenes (with the knockout punch acting as the cum shot)? Aren’t superheroes usually depicted visually as naked human figures with lines drawn onto them and colored as costumes? I think I remember Frank Miller once saying that, in his first run on Daredevil, the scenes where Elektra and Daredevil would fight were basically the two of them consummating their relationship. That’s the way superheroes do it.'

People were unconvinced by Joe Casey, but I do think the premise makes sense. It's a shame that Sex is so didactic and asexual, but it got me thinking about why and how sex and violence are linked in superhero fights.

Note: there's nothing explicit in these scans, and I don't bring up outright sexual assault, but the confluence of sex and violence can get pretty uncomfortable and misogynistic at points, so fair warning.

The story so far: "Incursions" are happening across the multiverse, where two Earths from different realities will occupy the same space and collide. Upon collision, both universes are destroyed. The only way to prevent that, each time there's an incursion, is to blow up one of the Earths before they properly collide.

I've always been a DC Comics fan. (In large part because when I was a little girl I wanted to be Wonder Woman.) I never read Marvel comics before falling in love with movie Loki. Since then I've read some comics with Loki in them, but just diving into Marvel is frustrating for fans of Loki as played by Tom Hiddleston. In most of the comics, Loki is a straight-up villain whose motivation is that he's evil. He's still Machiavellian, but missing (usually) is the heartbreak, the mad struggle for power and identity, and the complex, intense relationship with Thor.

So I'm compiling a list of comics that are of particular interest to movie Loki fans. I'll add to this list whenever I discover more.

We do learn that earth-time and azarath-time move differently, and in earth-time it's only been a few weeks since Phantom Stranger sold Rachel Roth out to Trigon, but it's been a much longer time, possibly years, for Raven on Azarath. This may help explain why in earth-time scenes only about five minutes have passed since the very messy end of last issue, while Trigon takes his sweet time explaining the family history to his sons back home.

And looking at that splash, can I just say, I think Trigon prefers Raven 'cause she's the only one of his kids that's pretty?

This was the first 'Tangled Web' story and it was done by superhero fan Garth Ennis. While it's more SFW than your average Ennis book, there is quite a bit of gruesome body horror that wouldn't be out of place in a Cronenberg film, so take that as a warning.

To icon_uk, from his biggest fan...

Max Allan Collins' brief run on Batman from back in the day isn't really well-remembered. At most, a few Jason fans and writers draw from it as the primary source for Jason's post-Crisis origin, but that's about it.

And yet, said run contained some glorious, glorious scenes. Like this one.

Just ignore the context, and pretend that one of the Robins (probably Dick) is paying the Joker back for all those years of being bound and gagged...

More Eroica! These scans come from a pair of side stories that were published alongside the main story in volumes six and seven. They are part of the ongoing continuity, but mostly exist as an excuse to give us some flashbacks to our heroes' respective childhoods. Warning for scenes involving coercion of a minor in the second story.
