He's back in the DC reboot. Let's look at another from days gone by....

Was there ever a period of creative ferment as compressed and productive as DC Comics in late 1986 and early 1987? Looking at the ads in this comic, I see that Watchmen was underway, the Giffen/Maguire "One punch!" period of the Justice League was starting, The Dark Knight Returns had just finished up and Miller/Mazzucchelli's Batman: Year One was published. So was "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?", and George Perez started his noted run on Wonder Woman a couple of months later. All have, quite rightly, been collected for posterity, sometimes several times.

Right in the midst of this is one more comic that would seem to be of a piece with the others but has been largely forgotten and never collected. If you want to read them, you need to track down the originals of Matt Wagner's four-issue miniseries Demon. It's a little difficult to see why, though I think it's a mixture of two factors. Wagner had just finished his acclaimed indie comic Mage: The Hero Discovered and this new work suffered by comparison for DC's lower-quality production values -- four-colour printing and newsprint didn't do Wagner's art any favours. And secondly, has there ever been a character of such promise as Etrigan who never came to fruition? Maybe it's the difficulty of writing him in rhyme all the time. He's been given a launch or relaunch no less than five times by my count and never hit the big time.

Nevertheless, there's gold to be found in this iteration of the yellow-skinned demon. This extended sequence, from issue #3, demonstrates why you never, never talk to demon lords.

Bloodbath #1

The Bloodlines have ended. The heroes of the DCU are now finally able to assemble against the Parasite threat, but will it be enough? Or will it be the fall of Earth?

18 pages of a 56 page story.

I have to also warn you that while the art of the Annuals each had specific teams who were used to the books they were on... but the artists who worked on Bloodbath varied, and the art seemed very rushed at times. (Including having a page that I won't post with Martian Manhunter on it that hurts my eyes)

You know, reaching this issue makes me realize just how much of Bloodlines I've posted already, totally thought I had a few more issues before I reached the Demon Annual.

Can't say I've ever been a big Garth Ennis fan, this might even be the only comic I own that he worked on, still it was surprisingly amusing.

With the Bat-boys gone, the traditional position of Titan Leadership has been left open in both current teams of Titans, and on both teams, the resident Wonder has stepped up to the plate.

Now, this certainly makes sense for Donna, who's well-respected by her teammates, has a history of command with the amazons and the Darkstars, and is generally a competent, charismatic person with a high emotional IQ, all good traits for the job. But what about Cassie? If you've been reading TEEN TITANS since she joined the title, you could be excused for thinking that a pet rock would do a better job. Up until very recently, she's been a flat, lifeless superpowered Mean Girl with no real purpose or interest in life outside of chasing boys with status and cutting down everyone else. Even since McKeever had her reject Ares' influence and reinvent herself, she's been becoming tolerant and competent only slowly, and is still mostly a non-entity on the team.

But it was not always so! There was a time when she genuinely deserved to wear the double-double, when she was a Wonder Girl in truth and quite a likable character. Let us wander back, then, to those Halcyon days, and meet the girl who earned her symbol as few heroes do.

( Look, she can even pronounce the Prince symbol! If that's not damn impressive I don't know what is. )

Next time: Our new Wonder learns more about her powers, acquires a rogue, and survives a relatively literal trial-by-fire.

When Wondy was... Dakota Fanning?

Some highlights from one of my favorite JLU episodes, "Kid Stuff", in which Diana, Clark, Bruce, John... and Etrigan are tranformed into children, with Dakota Fanning voicing Diana.

And, the last three pages of Wonder Woman V2 #62, which ended the Perez run. The War of the Gods is over, though not everyone survived. Perez's final issue was about the characters closing chapters of their lives and beginning new ones, including the Amazons, Steve, Etta, and Ed, with Diana trying to figure out what she should do, next. Nessie, meanwhile, is graduating Junior High, and we conclude with a little meta and Fourth Wall breaking.

When Wondy was Awesome, part 9 (From Hell to Olympus)

Time for another author switch! We've left WML behind with the 100-issue spectacular and the death of Artemis, and now Diana's out of the stupid black straptastic bra and out of Boston, and into the hands of John Byrne.

Byrne's run is... hard to pin down. The man wrote with an agenda; there were things he wanted to fix and things he wanted to change and that's what he did. And a lot of those things were good. He repaired most of the damage WML did toward the end of his run, both to Diana and, to some degree, to Polly. He built an actual Wonder Family out of Donna and Cassie and Artemis. He made a point of making Diana unique and ridiculously first-tier badass, firmly establishing how high she belonged in the DCU power hierarchy.

( Diana really attracts a lot of writers who do their own art, doesn't she? )

Next time: Diana teams up with Zauriel, has a romance with a guy who, miracle of miracles, is actually worth her time, and saves all of creation. And the art is wicked cool.

Batman Family "Dollar comic" back covers

The relentless stagflation of the 70's was not kind to comics. 50 cents for a 100 page super-spectacular became 60 cents, then became 60 cents for a 64 page giant, and finally 60 cents for a 48 page "giant." (back then, comic companies were actually reluctant to raise cover prices, you see). Then came the "Dollar Comic," at 80 pages for a dollar, with all-new content. But 80 pages was just too much paper to be affordable, so after only a few months of 80 page dollar comics, the page count was cut back to 64 pages.

But again, this was an era when comic publishers felt a responsibility to deliver value for your dollar, so DC eliminated all advertising from the 64 page dollar comics. 64 pages with no ads was nearly the same number of story pages as 80 pages with ads, so they could tell readers that nothing had changed except a lower printing bill for DC. And it gave the artists the opportunity to create pinups for the back cover.( Read more... )
