Sam & Max (among others) Hit The Beach!

I was asked for some of the Steve Purcell Sam & Max I found the other day, and I think I'll still do that once I've had a chance to see what's been reprinted before. But I get the sense that a lot of it will already be familiarand so I decided to ~~take off every~~ zig and go for something unexpected.

The now-defunct Amazing Heroes comics-industry magazine would print a Swimsuit Issue once a year every year from 1986 to, I believe, the year they folded: 1992. Nebulously intended to poke fun at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues, a lot of the contributions missed the point and were cheesecakey (and sometimes beefcakey) fanboy atrocities like you might expect. But a fair number of them showed some humour, and for some the artists were just tenuously using the swimsuit theme to go about drawing whatever they wanted. These are some gems I found in the first two editions as well as the 1989 (no idea where the 1988 went) including, yes, some Sam & Max.

Today I bring you one of DC's rarely considered gems from the early 90's.

A dramatic tale of romance! Science fiction! Crime-fighting!

One of them is a detective. The other one is a cartoonist. Together... THEY FIGHT CRIME!

Oh, did I mention that one of them is a gorilla? Cuz that's kind of important.

Yes, it's Angel & The Ape, by Phil Foglio. Originally a pure humor comic by E. Nelson Bridwell and Bob Oksner, the series was given a reboot by DC to bring it into their standard continuity, and our beloved creator of Girl Genius (then just a distant twinkle of gears and gals in his eye), was tapped for the job. (:
