On the one side, you've got the Red Hulk, Thunderbolt Ross: formerly a four-star general in the Air Force hunting the Hulk, currently a dead man turned Rulk being hunted.

On the other, the technomorphic transhuman Zero/One, Dr. Parul Kurinji: once working for the shady super-scientific Omnisapient Systems, now for the future's betterment.

They're a natural protagonist/antagonist pair, opposites that they are; one's raw power and just-in-time tactics, the other's refactored intelligence and long-term strategies. Until this month's Hulk #40, they hadn't yet had a direct confrontation, Zero/One only sending her attack augment Black Fog time and again in bids to eliminate him.

( But then, last month, the crimson crusher's latest bête noire Omegex the world-ender BRAMMM'd him right into Bar Harbor, Maine. )

In my earlier post about this issue we could have had a battle on four fronts.

Red Hulk.

vs.

The Serpent's forces (Angrir/Ben Grimm + Nazi war mech)

vs.

Modok and his forces (Zzax + LMD robots)

vs.

Zero/One and her forces (Black Fog and her own mutations)

with no one else in NYC to stop them.

Guess how this goes down?

Before throwing over Speedball in Missouri and Nevada's Initiative team in Las Vegas, he faced the Thunderbolts outside Chicago.

How much can one Hulk be hated?

In terms of the Red Hulk, you've no doubt already figured out the answer.

Parker's Hulk run certainly has, its Scorched Earth arc having Rulk take it on the chin from Iron Man, Thor, and Namor. It's also realized that if you want to make a character viable beyond the events of his creation (despite Incredible's upcoming conclusion, Hulk promises to be predominantly "all red" for a while yet.. Rulk and Red She-Hulk? Definitely a familial connection..), you've got to draw him away from it.

To that end, it's been cranking out all-new antagonists since March, four deathly deadly terrors with their own reasons to see Rulk dead: the living weapon Omegex, the vengeful soldier Fortean, the creative mastermind Zero/One, and the haunting Hyderabadian spectre known as the Black Fog.

It's wrapped up those acts of creation with this month's #33, to take Rulk off to space; if future solicits are any indication, it won't be coming back to them for a few months at the least. Still, Parker's done a nice job dropping a few new toys into the box, and I'm eagerly anticipating his picking them up again.

(A note: These're pages from Hulk #30.1-33, none of which exceed the 7/21 split; only 4 from this week's #33 are below, for those who need to know that sort of thing.)

( Partly because he's also been fairly deft at their construction.. )

So in this week's Thunderbolts, Jeff Parker builds issue plot around roster alteration.

He's been doing it for the last few, with the introduction and quick removal of a very unstable Hyperion (or to hear him say it to Man-Thing, "Monster, I am KING HYPERION!!") and the for-now more permanent addition of Satana Hellstrom (as occult specialist.)

This issue continues that, featuring the government-mandated creation of a backup team (dubbed cleverly, if not charmingly, by Moonstone as "The Underbolts"), which promises to be fun; at the very least, the Shocker and Mister Hyde and Centurius are potentials.

( Also, the A-team is sent to deal with a mysterious magical German castle.. but first, they've got to meet their new friend. )

For blackruzsa, who requested any of a series of moments mentioned in an article entitled "The Balut in a Superhero's Underpants".

It says that "[i]f the Americans have their Easter Eggs, we Filipinos have our Balut Eggs. (Okay, I just made up that term, but it seems appropriate anyway.) Balut Eggs are those moments when Filipinos (or something Pinoy) suddenly pops up in foreign movies, TV shows, novels, and comic books."

It goes on to list several of those moments that appear in American comic books. I was intrigued by one of them - in Marvel Comics’ “Agents of Atlas,” Mt. Pinatubo erupts again and Sentry flies in just in time to rescue a damaged Phivolcs helicopter - so I went to do a little digging and to my surprise, I found I had it.

So now everything but the Thunderbolts tie-in's over for Hulk's Scorched Earth, leaving us with the fallout of the Intelligentsia's machinations; Doom's brain damage, a spider legged MODOK, and the Red Hulk.

The last of whom's been establishing his presence in the larger MU, riding along with the Avengers and unwillingly killing Araña's dad. He even seems to be getting Hulk to himself for the next few, while Bruce rages against the gods in Incredible Hulks..

..so now's the perfect time to give him his own enemies, foes outside himself.

( People who he can punch in the face such that we're rooting for him, at least. )

After the events of Thunderbolts #150 and before the events of #152, there's #151.

The events of #150 and what #152's leading into are and seem to be based on the existing history of characters; #151 focuses on the Ghost, who hasn't had much of one beyond being a fervent destroyer of corporations (and, recently, a conspiracy nut.)

It's a pretty good origin story as these things go, even if it does make you think about just how necessary an origin really is for certain characters.

( But there's always an out, if you want one; he's telling it to Moonstone. )

30 Days of Winter: Day 10 - Heroes and Villains (late): The Agents of Atlas

Jimmy Woo and the other Agents of Atlas, while clearly a group of "good guys" (at least to us readers!), have occasionally used the fact that the Atlas Foundation was formerly an evil empire to their advantage.

Below, in two full pages and one panel from the eight-page Agents of Atlas story "The Heist" in Dark Reign: New Nation, they break into Fort Knox (very publicly) and make off with a large amount of solid gold bullion. Their aim is to figure out who was behind a plan to buy weapons without the inconvenience of getting Congress approval first.

Of course, they've also been on the receiving end - particularly at the hands of Jimmy's once-girlfriend and current (during the particular story arc) nemesis, Suwan a.k.a the Jade Claw. She is the head of Great Wall, an offshoot and rival of Jimmy's Atlas Foundation. After commandeering Atlas' communications channels (twice) and causing the saucer heavy damage in a firefight, she decides to enjoy herself a little - on a personal level - during another fight.

( 'Truly this is Shangri-La for me. To feel sensual pleasure while my forces overcome my enemies...is purest bliss.' )

So there they are: the Agents as heroes both playing *at* being villains and being played *by* villains. I love their versatility and I miss them.
