Not a lot of people were reading the FF's book back in 2002, or if they were, they weren't talking much about it. The entire line was just coming off the doldrums of the nineties, and while there were a few good solid superhero books coming out around then - like the underrated Nicienza run on Thunderbolts - it was a quiet time at Marvel.

Which is a shame, because in the middle of this dead zone, you get one of the single greatest moments for Dr. Doom ever.

One Perfect Moment: Ultimate Spider-Man

As much as I'm liking Miles Morales, I really miss (Ultimate) Peter Parker. He was probably one of Bendis' best characters.

There's so many great moments with him but one of my favorites is this hilarious scene in Ultimate Spider-Man #12.

Basically Peter has gone after the Kingpin after finding out that his uncle's murderer was once employed by him. The Kingpin finally confronts him at the conclusion of the story and we get the following exchange...

icon_uk already posted about the strange origin of this one. As I understand it, most FROM THE MARVEL VAULT comics are stories that for one reason or another were shelved and never printed, lost stories from Marvel's archives finally seeing the light of day. In the case of this DEFENDERS issue though, it was written so long ago that, while they still have the artwork, nobody had a copy of the original plot anymore, nor did anyone remember what it was supposed to be. Apparently, even flipping through the art didn't jog any of the original creative team's memories. So Kurt Busiek (who didn't write the original plot) basically has to come up with a new story tailored to the already completed artwork.

So to recap: Spidey learned about the Kingpin's presence in New York and wanted to do something about it. He managed to infiltrate the Kingpin's quarters and stole his security tapes, finding evidence of Fisk murdering one of his underlings and releasing it to the media. Thus, Kingpin fled the country.

Now...he's back.

After the 'Ultimate Venom' posts I did last month or so, I figured I'd do a series of posts on the Kingpin from Ultimate Spider-Man. IMO, the Kingpin is one of Bendis's best characters both in and outside of Ultimate. Bendis had a background writing noir/crime comics prior to coming to Marvel, so its not surprising that the first major villain in the series after the Goblin would be Wilson Fisk.
