As promised, this is the second mega-posting to celebrate the end of "Dude(s) in Distress Week", dealing with published images... (This is sort of a "Greatest Hits", as much of it has been posted before)

The history of the "Dude in Distress" in graphical literature is a long and noble one... there are probably medieval woodcuts showing that sort of thing, but as that slightly predates most of the usual area of scans_daily, we'll skip to something vaguely more recent... well, relatively speaking.

LOTS of scans under the cut, but I've used smallish thumbnails so as not to kill your broadband completely! Just stun it slightly...

As the sun sets (or rises depending on time difference) on scans_daily's "Dude in Distress Week" (and thank you to the mods for it and to everyone who contributed such great issues), I thought I'd make a couple of posts featuring my favourites... First post will be some commissions, the second post will be some classic moments from the past, and the third will be my nomination for perfect "Dude in Distress" issue. And yes, I should probably apologise in advance for the sheer Robin-centricity of them, but frankly you should know me better by now! :D If cute guys in pixie boots aren't you're thing, please feel free to skip them all.

So far this weekend, I've made a post which looked at the public reaction to superheroes in the MU which has had some fascinating discussions arising out of it, and a post from Micronauts in which m'learned friend whitesycamoreraised some intriguing points of the treatment of those perceived as "other" in fiction.

This time though, I'm not going for the deep or the meaningful, I'm going straight to cute guys tied up...

Now I don't know how many of you have siblings, I have more than one myself, and I love them all, but one of the things about siblings is that we argue... A LOT... usually over unimportant stuff that we forget about by the next day but we argue, we squabble, we "debate heatedly". It's sometimes fun, often cathartic, and, on mercifully rare occasions (in my experience), destructive.

So one of the things that always irked me a little about the Hardy Boys was that they NEVER seemed to argue. They were always in agreement, always on the same page. Even when steps were taken to differentiate between the personalities of the brothers (Joe being impulsive and intuitive, Frank analytical and logical) they were always in perfect sync with each other that it sort of set my teeth on edge.

Gerry Conway took over writing the Hardy Boys graphic novels from Scott Lobdell as of the last issue, and one of the first things he did was change that...

Sometimes all it takes is a poik in the wrong place....

I had a pretty interesting couple of weeks. I visited New York City. I met queenanthai in real life. A whole bunch of other, more personal stuff happened. Personal stuff that I would rather not dwell on anymore. So, in the spirit of escaping from problems that defy easy, superhero-style solutions, I decided to post something I have been meaning to post for a while, but real life kept getting in the way.

s0mnambulance's post about questionable 80s comics inspired me to look back at Miss Victory's original, Golden Age stories. And I discovered that even back in those early years, Miss Victory stories had some rather questionable subtext.

The following story originally appeared in Captain Aero Comics #9. Art by Charles Quinlan, writer unknown.

As has been noted many times, and by infinitely wiser heads than mine, Batman and the Joker have a truly fascinating dynamic... Committed crime buster versus repeatedly committed criminal, implacable order versus capricious chaos, life versus death. This Bob Kane lithograph is one of my favourite images, and it's not even from a comic!

This was used as a pin up on the Back of Excalibur 3, y'know, back when being a fun character wasn't anathema or a good reason to kill them off (Though we'd already lost Doug by this point, so things were heading in a downward direction)

The context is wholly unsexy, but context is for the weak...and I just realised that the dudes that are standing in the background, that are dudes...don't look like dudes at all, those legs in the background look like the legs of dancing girls in mini-skirts (meaning that the publishers really missed the boat by not demanding Totleben to draw a larger clearer version of this for the cover Now was the dirty rag used for reference the property of Moore or Totleben?

Today I had my very first commission in the mail, a wonderful artwork done by Mitch Ballard.
I didn't have to think long about the characters: Dick Grayson was clearly the first choice, and since you don't see the two of them together that often anymore, I decided on Wally West as the second character.

Special thanks to icon_uk for introducing me to this genre, which promises to be a great and very welcome new addiction. :)
