As the sun sets (or rises depending on time difference) on scans_daily's "Dude in Distress Week" (and thank you to the mods for it and to everyone who contributed such great issues), I thought I'd make a couple of posts featuring my favourites... First post will be some commissions, the second post will be some classic moments from the past, and the third will be my nomination for perfect "Dude in Distress" issue. And yes, I should probably apologise in advance for the sheer Robin-centricity of them, but frankly you should know me better by now! :D If cute guys in pixie boots aren't you're thing, please feel free to skip them all.

Following my recent Scarecrow posting, I mentioned this story, and was asked to post if I could. And I can, so I will.

It's from Detective Comics 835 and 836, the post OYL era, in the midst of the Paul Dini run on Detective. This story isn't by him though, it's a fill in two-parter by John Rozum, with art by the legendary Tom Mandrake and some seriously creative used of colour by Nathan Eyring.

It's also VERY cinematic, this was written and drawn like a damn good horror movie IMHO (Or possibly a "terror movie", I believe Boris Karloff used to distinguish the difference between the two; A "horror movie" may make you sick to your stomach, a "terror movie" makes you scared to go upstairs to your bedroom in the dark after watching it. I know what he means)

So draw the curtains, turn down the lights and welcome to the Scarecrow in a whole new light... the light of....

Batman Adventures Annual #1 features five short stories by Paul Dini, about various Batman villains trying to go straight and how and why they fail (mostly)

One of the beauties of Batman: The Animated Series, was that it could handle the light and it could handle the dark.

Now the series, in the early years, was limited by what was permitted to be shown in cartoons at the time (Which is why, for example, the Joker never killed anyone in the early episodes). The comics, however were not. They didn't go to the "grim" often, which made the times it did all the more powerful.

Please be warned, this post contains material that may be triggering for rape or sexual assault.

The second and final part of "Dead Reckoning," a seemingly-forgotten six-part DETECTIVE COMICS story by Ed Brubaker featuring one of the most intriguing (and since unused) new villains to appear in BATMAN comics over the past decade.

It kind of boggles my mind that no one's done anything with the Charlatan since this story, back in July 2003. He hasn't even gotten so much as a cameo in an Arkham cell! Such a shame. Just think of the potential for an insane method actor and master of disguise with the inability to feel fear!

Plus, just imagine: he could have an in-Arkham romance with Jane Doe... assuming the two could find one another. And maybe since he's a lover of Lon Chaney and Boris Karloff, perhaps Sloane's an admirer of Basil Karlo! I could totally see the Charlatan and Clayface putting on a grand theatrical production of crime and horror. But then, maybe that's just the ham actor in me.

In last week's post about Paul Sloane--the second Two-Face--lbd_nytetrayn asked if Paul's made any appearances since his brief return in 1987. The answer is yes(ish), thanks to the generally-great Ed Brubaker.

In early 2003, while "Hush" was well underway in BATMAN, DETECTIVE COMICS writer Ed Brubaker penned his own six-part murder mystery that tied together all of Batman's rogues in a secret conspiracy to kill the caped crusader. And unlike "Hush," which brought in a brand-new character to fulfill the double-cliches of being "long lost childhood best friend" and "totally obvious red herring," Brubaker dusted off the concept of Paul Sloane for "Dead Reckoning," but with a modern twist. In doing so, he created a far more interesting original villain than Hush himself, one with tons of potential who, of course, hasn't been seen nor mentioned since.

For that and many other reasons, I lament that this story was utterly ignored in favor of "Hush." Not that this story isn't without its flaws--oh my, it has them--but we'll get to those inside.

If this story had a more appropriate artist, or a superstar on par with Tim Sale or Jim Lee, I can't help but wonder if it might have gotten far more attention. For all its flaws, I think this is still a superior story than "Hush," even if much of the superiority comes from untapped potential. But I'll let you decide when I post the finale later today.

From Detective 571, from the marvellously retro run of Mike W Barr and Alan Davis...

As with all good stories this has been a BEAR to trim down and keep the best moments. It has everything I look for in a story like this, a great Batman and Robin dynamic (This was one of the last issues to feature Jason Todd 1.0 (or it might be early Jason Todd 2.0 depending on which side of the cusp you look on this as being), nice simple sinister plot from the villain, and the rest you'll see for yourself as this continues...
