Back in ye goode olde days, Gotham villains didn't need no stinkin' telekinetic powers or rotting corpses to do their bidding. No, they got by through bein' tougher than the toughies and smarter than the smarties, and makin' it square. Well, as square as drug-running, arms-smuggling, "protection"-selling, and cold-blooded murder can be, anyways. Of course, the sheer snazziness of their character designs didn't hurt, either.

Like most of you, I imagine, I can't muster up any enthusiasm for the new Ventriloquist running through the pages of Gail Simone's Batgirl. As dull as I'd found Peyton Riley's story, I'd happily take her (preferably written by Paul Dini) over this SAW-wannabe any day.

But, as with many things in life, none can compare with the original.

After having a look at Marvel's Season One announcements, I had a little think to myself about what it was and why it was needed.

Not many books are new-reader friendly. When I started reading Ms. Marvel, I jumped in to part 2 of a 2 part story and got the gist of things pretty quickly. I don't think that I've jumped on to a book without a signposted jumping on point and without a good awareness of the characters. It's often difficult to get into characters, or arcs, or even understand the world. Sometimes the hints that writers drop for new readers just clunk at the feet of old readers (focussed totality of my psychic powers, anyone?).

Maybe a set of one-off stories that explore characters and set up their background organically while also telling a good story are the order of the day.

Marvel already did one of those and they set the bar pretty high. It's called Doctor Strange: The Oath. Of course, not everything can be written by Brian K. Vaughan and drawn by Marcos Martin - that does help a book quite a bit.

It also helps if each issue of the book has a really accessible and interesting recap page. I can only think of three books off the top of my head that have used recap pages in an exciting way "in character" for the book - Patsy Walker: Hellcat, Incredible Herc and The Oath. I think that the Dark Reign: Young Avengers book did a few cool things as well, but I'm not entirely sure.

So, with no commentary, let's see how good the recap pages of The Oath #2, #3, #4 and #5 are at telling the story.

Following a request in my recent Ex Machina post, here's the complete chronology of 9/11, from the Great Machine's perspective.

This post comes with a warning because it's about the September 11 attacks and feature people and animals dying.

These scenes were originally dotted around the series, as flashbacks, with a scene here or there. They were used to flesh out characters and fill readers in to important themes in the modern stories. Taken out of that context, their impact is massively diminished.

Falling in love all over again

I've been thinking about Ex Machina recently. Part of it is because I'm mainlining my girlfriend's trades of Y The Last Man (I'm only just finished Girl on Girl, so please no spoilers) and finding that it's jolly excellent. It's very BKV, which is... well, duh, but he does have a distinct voice for his own characters. A number of the women in Y could show up in Ex Machina and not be out of place.

The other reason is that, like all good science fiction writers, BKV predicted the future with New York state's gay marriage laws.

I'm not sure that there's a writer on the go just now who could write about social and moral issues in the same way that BKV does. It's never preachy, it's never the case of "This character says it, so their viewpoint is the right one", it's just a discussion of lots of different ideas and values. His books feel like the smartest books I've read. His characters seem real, like actual people (And I'm impressed at the range of characters to come into play in Y) with their own fears and hopes. And the dialogue is real too. I don't meant to say that it's, like, Bendis real, you know. I do mean to say that it sounds a lot more like things that could conceivably come out of people's mouths than most every other book.

This is slightly a double dunter*, hitting the notes for both a didactic/message book and an alternate universe book. Ex Machina is, as the finale was at pains to point out, its own alternate universe and there's no "right" way for the characters to be. Like we saw with the wedding issue, Ex Machina is full of ideas. Usually when it's talking about political ideas it doesn't put them forward as The Best Way to do things. In Smoke Smoke, Hundred's stance on relaxing drug laws is countered by his aides' and the issues are just talked out. It's a series that consistently credits its readers with more than a modicum of intelligence and political awareness

This is from the Special #4, Grassroots and introduces us to the Gardener, who's a one off character. Like Pherson before him and The White after him, Gardener for his powers indirectly from the neighbours through the Great Machine.

I mentioned in my Queer and Country post that I intended to post some LGBTQ Ex Machina. This isn't originally the set of scans that I was thinking of (that would be FBI Agent Warren), but it's definitely an even bigger moment.

Hundred's officiated a wedding the night before (his 19th of his three months of office. "I've married more people than Elizabeth Taylor") but it's for a man who donated $65m to renovate athletic fields.
