Well my recent attempt to post a mini-story involving Helena Wayne huntress was foiled (and by foiled I mean I can't read/understand the rules properly) so I will do what any sane man would do.

Post more scans of Chuck Austen in a vain and misappropriated attempt at vengeance.

I've never been a big fan of all the Chuck Austen hate. Was he really that bad? Well... maybe. Polaris going batshit crazy and actually being Magneto's daughter are some of the bigger problems. But some of the special dislike is for "The Draco." But there's a very good scene in Part One of the story.

A while ago, in another Chuck Austen post, I mentioned that he had written a story where a racist Kryptonian policeman fucks women to death. There was a demand for scans. Here are scans, just to show that I didn't imagine it all.

It's from Action Comics 821, titled Godfall: Preus Returns. Preus is a policeman from the bottle city of Kandor that Superman ended up in in Superman 202 for the next few issues. Superman killed a kid (not really) and Preus was set on a mission of justice/revenge. I've not read those issues for about 6 years and when I did, I wasn't impressed with them. I'm not going to go back and refresh my memory, so you're getting no more backstory than that.

In case the bit in the first paragraph wasn't enough of a clue, this is a creepy and squicky book. There's almost no character who is sympathetic (the women aren't given enough of a character for me to say much about them.) Just to remind you, this is the story of a Racist Kryptonian who hangs around with white supremacists and fucks women to death, messily.

Our story starts, as all good Superman stories do, with ( Doomsday heading towards Metropolis. )

FAO Mods: Is it now standard practice that we have to use trigger warning tags? I noticed that my post had had them added, but that it was one of only two posts that did. I'm sorry that I screwed up with it; I thought that setting an age restriction, giving appropriate reasons for it, and describing the content was all that we needed.

...There was "Action Comics Weekly", DC's first attempt at a weekly comic book. It was an anthology comic somewhat on the model of 2000 AD, several continuing stories each week, with seven page chapters (and a two-page Sunday comics spread for Superman.) There were several interesting projects done during this run--I especially liked the new Secret Six they had. Sadly, sales and logistics reasons meant that the experiment lasted less than a year.

Love that Kirby art, though I think this might have been an inventory piece DC had lying around. 2 1/3 pages from each of the seven-page storiesin Action Comics Weekly #638 (2/7/89), one double-page spread, and a special treat!

The Sad Fate of Mr. Cream (Miracleman)

In Alan Moore's Miracleman (correctly Marvelman, but you can guess why that name didn't fly in America), the reader is given the story of Captain Marvel and Shazaam told in a rather more "realistic" light. Kind of like The Sentry, really, but not.... awful. This is not to be confused with Neil Gaiman's run on the series which flew, unsurprisingly, turned into a poetic dark fantasy.

Early on, Moore introduces us to Mr. Cream, an antagonistic man of the shadows looking to control and use Miracleman. Completely mercenary, he's more interested in the job. He's an odd character, mostly grounded except for the fact that he has sapphires for teeth. (really).

However, we are rid of Mr. Cream almost as soon as we meet him. In Issue 6, Miracleman can no longer change form and and his wife are being menaced by "Miracledog" at the behest of his archvillain. Mr. Cream is caught in the middle. Here are the results. Not pretty, to say the least.

okay, US War Machine had some good points.

the sequel? not so much, really.

i mean, without the halfway interesting hook of an insurgence on Latverian soil, it kinda needed to do " special ops team with power suits " good, and... well, it didn't fail, it just came in well below the mark.

oh, and the ar... the visual half of the medium went to... somewhere. Anyhow, I just wanted to show you some narm. It's good narm. Quality. From Tony Stark.

Only two scans this time, so I don't hate you all nearly as much anymore.

( Besides, there's a half-tanked Tony Stark. That's always fun, right? )

so yeah, U.S War Machine: it's written by Chuck Austen, the art is kinda Adi Granovian in the sense that Rocman X is like anything Mega Man, and the plot's pretty stock.

But come on: James Rhodes picked up by SHIELD to lead a team outfitted with covertly acquired Starktech onto Latverian soil to stop an AIM plot? It just sounds cool, doesn't it?

Runespoor7 requested interaction between Batman and children. This post I've scanned 4 pages from JLA #106, "The Pain of the Gods," Nov. 2004, 22 pages.

I don't have #105 so I can't summarize this very well, but I'll try; feel free to fill in the gaps in the comments, gang. The issue opens with Superman and Wonder Woman stopping a super-powered boy from beating the krep out of a gang of schoolyard bullies. The kid is furious with Superman for "letting his father die," and punches Supes clear through three rooms of the school building. So, next step: Talk with his mom.

Maybe I need to kick-start a "When The Wrecking Crew Was Awesome" week.

Since the discussion yesterday of Thunderball's characterization in Jeff Parker's Dark Reign: The Hood #1 mentioned that Thunderball's characterization has varied over the years, I thought that I'd post a few pages that illustrate a nice counterpoint to the way that Parker is writing him.

Although it causes me profound and pervasive spiritual agony to say this, the last time I recall Eliot Franklin being written as clearly articulate was by none other than Chuck Austen in Austen's Avengers vol. 3 stint. (This happened to be in the same storyline where Kelsey Leigh eventually became the new Captain Britain in a plot so rife with gleeful abandonment of consistency vis a vis the Captain Britain mythos that I don't think that I've ever met anyone who doesn't gleefully mock it.)

But to his credit, despite the absurd contrivance of Morgan Le Fey deciding to recruit the Wrecking Crew as the best choice to help her achieve dominion over England, Austen wrote a damn fine Thunderball (although, as someone has pointed out, it turns out to not be Eliot at all).

I like this Eliot Franklin; it references old school depictions of Eliot when his genius intellect was in evidence. He utters a literary reference and immediately expresses profound appreciation when Kelsey responds in kind -- to the point that he expresses regret when she refuses to step aside -- but he's not swayed from his stated mission one bit when she does refuse his request to move. It's a nice little character moment for both of them; they're both resolute, smart, and unyielding. I wish more writers would do this with Thunderball because it's just plain enjoyable to read him as a clearly educated and cultured man.
