Hello! Long-time lurker, first time poster here. Recent discussions of the DC reboot and the event some think is at the root of it (the long-term decline of sales since the implosion of the 90's comics-as-investment market) got me nostalgic for when I was most a purchaser of comics: the period of about 1982-1992 when publishers like Comico and Eclipse and First popped up and pushed Marvel and DC out of their comfort zone. As it happens I've been meaning to clean out the walk-in closet where I know I've got something like twenty boxes of comics and I've got a brand-new scanner here, so I thought I'd share some of the little gems I come across.

So far I've only found one box (I have a lot of crap in the closet), but it contained some fun items. I thought I'd start with a story from Marvel Fanfare #13, publication date March 1984. Now I know exactly why I bought this comic -- it would have been around 1986 and I was a big fan of both George Perez and Art Adams. The lead story was by the former, part of a continuing Black Widow story, while the cover was the latter (and, as far as I can tell from Wikipedia, was his first professionally published work). Still am a fan of both, actually, but at that time the local comic shop had Charles Vess in to sign things and this issue was among the books they had out for sale if one were interested in an autograph -- he had drawn the backup story. I figured what the heck and ponied up, since I'd at least have the Adams and Perez work. I didn't know who Vess was at the time, and I'm still kind of lukewarm about the Warriors Three, but I do know they get a lot of love around this community. And in the years since 1986 I've come to love Charles Vess with the passion of a thousand burning suns. He's one of the folks who turned me on to Art Nouveau illustration, examples of which now decorate my place of residence in all their glory.

So let us begin... )

Just watched it (yeah I know it was available in March). It was enjoyable, yet kinda weird. It didn't feel like Marvel's Thor universe at all to be honest. I thought it was going to be an animated version of the Son of Asgard comic series; it had some design similarities, but it isn't based on it at all.

Post gets kind of spoilery in the middle so it'll be behind a cut. So don't click it if you don't want to know anything!

There's some issues I have with the plot and nitpicky with some of the production value, but really I watched it because there's a teen!Loki in it ;D

This show has THE most well-adjusted and HAPPY Loki I have ever seen )

So overall, can I recommend it? It's a fun diversion of the Marvel Thor universe, but not one that can be placed in any of the continuities (guess you can say some kind of weird version of the Asgardians before one of the other Ragnaroks). I would like to see a continuation of this movie with better production values and where they can focus on the more adult-oriented way with the script, because there's potential there.

But you're not missing anything if you don't watch it. It's kind of like a good bit of fanfiction.

For added fun, imagine events in the entire movie as a giant metaphor about penis sizes. Because it can totally work as that.

This image is so weird you just have to click to see it )

Ah, internet memes. One of the pillars of the internet, right up there with youtube and porn.

It's always fun when comic book versions surface.

If you've been on the interwebz in the last decade, you've seen a "haters gonna hate" picture. I've decided to post my favorite comic book versions of this meme.

Post your own if it pleases you.

Enjoy!

Asgardian parties rule the school. These scenes are from Avengers #13 (awesome issue).

Volstagg has his mating plumage out and what superheroine will be able to resist?

Plus, Hawkeye is a smoothie.

Enjoy!

Walter Simonson's run of The Mighty Thor is just perfect. The Warriors Three are a big part of that perfection.

The Asgardians have just defeated Surtur and saved the Nine Realms. Time to head home? Odin's Stones, no! Volstagg, Hogun and Fandral hit the streets for some errands and Midgard fun!

They, in the words of Carl from ATHF, "Don't need instructions to know how to rock!"

Plus a scene from the cute flirtation that Beta Ray Bill and Sif had around that time.

Been going a little crazy on anything Loki related since the Thor movie; I just got the animated Thor and Loki: Blood Brothers and it's pretty cool with the animated comic book look, and the voice-acting is pretty solid.

But I also spotted this and even though I don't really like the Ben 10 art style, I gotta admit, can't...keep...eyes...off...teenage-Loki...must...resist...the snarky prettiness...

Now I can't wait for kid-Loki to grow up, but I bet he'll be even more estrogen bait!Cute Caramon and Raistlin thing the two brothers have got going there. And it's pretty funny in hindsight that Loki's pranking on his own son.

And doesn't Loki look sort of...familiar... )

It's time for another Balder post. Here we learn more about Balder's decision to set down the sword, Volstagg and Hogun are just plain awesome and we meet a young god on a mission of blood who discovers a new path.

Plus I've selected one of the pages that captures the epic and mythic feeling that All-Father Simonson gave to Thor.

Enjoy!

Here is another tale of Balder and Karnilla. This time Karnilla goes too far in her obsessive quest for Balder's affections.

Also, the first appearance of Balder's white hair, Loki and an amusing punishment and one Thor page gloriously out of context.

Decades before the meme, Thor already knew about the connection between his hammer and his manhood. ;)

Enjoy!

There has been a lack of EPIC! as of late, so let me hope that March starts off with a fresh batch of BAM! BOOM! POW!.

The Warriors Three continue their quest to stop Fenris, the Asgardian Wolf who would end all Asgard.

But that's not important. What's important is that the the Three continue to bring the awesomeness.

More Powerful Than.... )

Two scans from Warriors Three #2. This is an awesome issue-- it has the story of how the three of them became friends, and their history with Fenris, which involves flashbacks with twentysomething Warriors Three and Thor. However, sharing that would definitely be more than four pages, so instead here is a scene that made me laugh out loud.

The Warriors Three have discovered that Fenris is not where he should be )

Greetings True Believers!

The recent post about the Thor movie got me jonesing for more Thor. This is an epic moment with Thor and Beta Ray Bill from the Secret Invasion cross-over.

Why do I love this tie-in? Because of the brotherhood between Asgard and Broxton, the friendship between Thor and Bill and the epic battle that followed.

If you're ever in the Marvel universe, remember to follow these rules:

1. Don't fuck with Thor.
2. Don't fuck with Beta Ray Bill.
3. Don't fuck with Asgard
4. Don't fuck with Broxton, Oklahoma.

Okay, I want to start this post off with something midly off-topic (only mildly, I promise, and it ties in to the main post eventually, I promise):

I. Love. My. Boss.

Okay, Carol's not exactly my boss anymore. Friday was her last day, and she left me with a present before she left. You see, her brother left her with all of his old

comic books and never came back for them. She's moving, and had no desire to keep them, so she gave them to me. And do you know what was amongst that treasure trove?

Walt Simonson's run on The Mighty Thor.

And so, I offer you, my friends, the closest thing to a Hildy mega-post we're likely to get.

Lots of images below the cut, pretty large and not the least bit dialup friendly.

We start with Asgard under attack, and Frigga being put in charge of evacuating the children...

Not everyone's down with this plan )
