And now it's time for one of my rare "Context is for the weak" posts...

In Amazing Spider-Man 317, the ongoing relationship between two guys and the alien symbiote they have both bonded to comes to a surprising climax...

( And by climax I mean... well, you can guess I think )

Out of all the 'Ultimizations' that Bendis has done over the years, I think Eddie Brock/Venom was one of the best. Bendis had always been hesitant to use Venom but the demand had been great and then EIC Bill Jemas pretty much had to push him to do it. To Bendis's credit, rather than holding his nose and putting out a mediocre depiction (like Sam Raimi did with the character) he did a full on rehaul of everything about the character and made him work.

Also this story is, while building off on the characters, a stand-alone story (which was probably intentional given that Marvel wanted new readers to pick this up) so you don't need to be up to date with everything that has come before.

And now for something completely different.

It's 1997. Foggy Nelson discovered that Matt is Daredevil. As part of making up for the years of lies, Matt joins Foggy in partnering with a vicious attorney named Rosalyn Sharpe (who is also Foggy's bio-mother).

Venom: On Trial! This miniseries is kind of a sequel to the Spider-man Special Edition: Venom on Trial. If you read the review of that one-shot, you'd know Matt Murdock was eager to defend Venom and even asked Spider-man to show as a witness, successfully getting him acquitted. However, Spider-man punched Venom and spoiled his plan by revealing that the symbiote was still part of his body. When Murdock refused to handle the civil lawsuit Venom wanted to bring against Spider-man, Venom fired him.

One of the things you can play around with when it comes to the Ben Reilly character is, he's Spider-Man. At least, he was Spider-Man for a time. But there's a moral code to him that's not as fully formed as Peter Parker's moral code. So if I were to pitch a story where you suspect Peter of killing a family, you would never buy that. You would never believe for a moment that he'd be capable of that. But with Ben Reilly, it's a distinct possibility.
