There are some artists who were ahead of their time, or at least the printing process involved in the production of their art. Art Adam's is one of them, as this story from 1986 proves.

This is very much a case in point, you can SEE the colouring and printing process mangling this tale to hell and back, and that's painful.

This story, has, to the best of my knowledge, never been collected or reprinted, which is a shame as it really deserves a modern re-colouring and printing if any does.

Ann Nocenti was the creator and writer on the series which made Art Adams a name to be recognised; "Longshot", the story of a sort of naive, well-meaning alien dealing with the real world and finding the likes of moral ambiguity frustrating. Here we see something quite similar, using another handy naive, well-meaning alien... One of my favourites!

At the risk of sounding like an old fart, listening to Rachel and Miles Explain the X-Men has reminded me of how much FUN the old X-Men titles could be, and how densely packed the issues were, plotwise back in that pre-"Stories written for TPB" era.

Case in point was this issue #26, which I genuinely happened to chance upon whilst tidying up my flat.

Zombies... Miracleman killing his former sidekick... Identity Crisis... it's been a fairly harrowing series of postings lately...

And whilst those have, for the most part, been good powerful stories... more or less.... well... less in a couple of cases IMHO, but that's neither here nor there, it's time for another change of pace.

Alan Davis is akin to comfort food for me, his art is sleek and vaguely cartoony in the best sense, and coupled with the right writer (Chris Claremont, Mike W. Barr or himself, amongst others) produces awesome results. I've posted New Mutants Annual #2 in the past, as well as X-Men Annual #10, but this remains a favourite)

Thos who saw my post earlier in the week will recognise the green guy, anyone who knows the New Mutants will know who the other guy is.

The athleticism of Nightwing or Nightcrawler would be fun, though technically neither of those are powers, but skills they work very, very hard to perfect and I'm way too lazy to be able to keep that sort of physique up..

Teleportation would be pretty damned awesone, flight would be nearly as great and telekinesis can be amazingly versatile...

However... there are two powers I'd want to possess, and they reside in the same body...

Doug Ramsey always had, in his old appearance, two distinct super-powers, one was omnilingualism, and the other was that rarest of gifts;

I've actually been sort of torn on what to post the past couple of days since the same characters sort of fill multiple slots..

Favourite Male Character, Favourite Friendship, Character I would most want to bring back from the dead all sort of combined... (Look he was dead for so damn long (literal, actual DECADES) that I have a lot of "He's back?!?" inertia to overcome... I'll get there eventually). I should probably try harder to think of something new, and I may well do, but in the meantime, it's back to the old favourites.

Long time, or even relatively new readers of s_d should have no problem identifying who I mean...

The little mutant that could... and his slightly strange buddy! (and I'm STILL not sure which is which)

It's been a while since my Fanart posts included commissions of my own, and I got a couple in, which celebrate my particular favourites!

So most of you will have some idea what to expect going in...

Many moons ago (Good Lord, has it really been over 3 years???), I posted some pages from "New Mutants Forever", which was Chris Claremont's return to the X-Men's original cadet team.

It was, as I said at the time, a very mixed bag, with too many of Claremont's tired plot tropes (mind control, body horror, enforced (but enjoyable) release from moral boundaries etc) and not enough of the redeeming features he usually employed (cameraderie, loyalty), though there were moments here and there...

I now conclude that post with some pages from issues 4 and 5, and in particular the last pages of the last issue (The earlier pages are basically to support those). Be warned there is some Nazi imagery under the cut, if such things cause you problems you may wish to avoid this.

(Cover by Barry Windsor-Smith, who did a run of NM covers)

This story comes just after the arc where the New Mutants had temporarily joined the Hellions as part of a scheme by Emma Frost (then still full on evil member of the Hellfire Club) to get them on her side and demoralise Magneto, then the Headmaster of Xaviers), the team had recovered and some had headed home to spend time with their folks.

Warning, this post contains violence towards sadistic psychopaths... well A sadistic psychopath )

a night out at the pub!

This is an unsual issue in that it has four different pencillers; David Williams, Mike Wieringo, Jeff Moy and Mike Miller, the art shifts are a little jarring at times, and Brian Braddock's hair approaches the hilarious at times, but try not to let that distract you..

Hi-jinks ensue )
