In 2006 Wildstorm gained the rights to publish comics off of the various New Line Horror characters (Freddy, Jason and Leatherface). Previously they were published by Avatar and as you can expect they were little more than gore porn. Wildstorm's output was a mixed bag but they published some genuinely good stories (one of them was the comic where Jason befriends a deformed boy which you can see in the archives).

In my opinion the best comic published from them was the initial series from 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning with Wesley Craig on art. It's one of the better horror comics I've read and it makes me genuinely sad that Abnett and Lanning never worked on any of the recent films because this would have been ten times better than the 'prequel' or the 3D movie that just came out.

As a content warning there's an included rape scene in addition to the usual gore and violence.

His style helped tell the tale with detail and fragility.

That clashed with the simple and solid depictions that'd come before in IDW's universe.

The clash was made obvious at the end of issue #3, when the protagonists met an antagonist.

Galvatron, seeking to raise dormant Cybertronians to fight the thing called D-Void, came to Dykayra.

There, he met a face he wasn't expecting.

" I-it cannot be! "

" Oh, but it is, Galvatron.. "

His familiar foe loomed. )

But not, sadly in a revived Marvel UK, but in the usual American Marvel.... though at least some British creators are involved.

Wow, surprised no one has posted this yet, as the latest Journey Into Mystery refers to it.

Ah well, the conclusion and aftermath of the fun "Exiled" story arc.

Break the curse.  )

For Free Comic Book Day, Boom! Studios has released a prologue to Abnett and Lanning (and main artist Brad Walker)'s upcoming series The Hypernaturals.

"It is the far future; the human race has finally colonized the galaxy, preserving an era of prosperity that's only possible because of The Hypernaturals. They're a celebrated, galaxy-wide superhero task force that keeps the peace. That is, until they all mysteriously vanish. Now, as the galaxy teeters on the brink of chaos, it's up to a group of retired and long forgotten Hypernaturals - and their novice recruits - to save the galaxy from complete destruction."

After the team almost all got killed horribly in the last arc, New Mutants #41 is a downtime issue. Blink shows up, sees everyone's acting glum, and teleports everyone to Madripoor to party down at their local, somewhat-later-than-everyone-else celebration of the Chinese New Year.

This, for some reason, involves David Lopez deciding to go a little exaggerated and cartoony from time to time. I will warn you now that Roberto has gone out for the evening and decided, "You know what? I'm going to do my best Donkey Kong impression. Ladies love that!"

Then Doug facepalms. It's great.

Roberto screws up )
