This year I attended the second London Super Comic Convention, and had a LOT of fun.

There were some great panels (Though I only attended the "Batman through the Ages" one, which had Brian Bolland, Gary Frank, David Finch and Neal Adams on the panel (and included the unforgettable moment of Neal Adams testing the microphone by singing "Over at the Frankenstein Place" to the room, and did it well too!) and some absolutely terrific cosplayers (The Rule 63 Deadshot was excellent, the Jack of Hearts was spectacular, the G'nort was... unforgettable, and the two little lads of colour (One was black, the other was, I think, Indian), who can't have been more than five or six, as Young Justice Nightwing and Captain America and who were wandering around hand in hand (Their dad's were with them I hasten to add), were among the most preciously adorable things I've seen in a long time (and I mean that in an absolutely wholesome sense)

But you know me... Artists here I come! )

There's not been a lot of attention for the New Mutants here lately, either the current run, or the "New Mutants Forever", and it's maybe time to do something about that.

Now, for those not familiar with the concept of  "a curates egg" it dates back to an old Punch cartoon in 1895, where a parson is seen having breakfast whilst visiting his bishop, and the bishop notes, "I'm afraid you've got a bad egg, Mr Jones.", to which the very nervous curate replies, desperate not to seem ungrateful or rude, "Oh, no, my Lord, I assure you that parts of it are excellent!"

Now a bad egg is, of course, bad all through, so the original meaning was something which may appear to have good and bad bits, but overall is spoiled, and nowadays generally means something which is a mixed bag of good and bad...

And why do I mention this when starting a review of the first three issues of New Mutants Forever.. Go on... guess!

First one of the good parts... an Art Adams Warlock cover from issue 2!

A LOT of images under the cut (Around 7 pages from issues 1, 2 and 3, and 2 pages of a preview of 4)

Following a different path down memory lane... )

In response to a request from Shadowpsykie, here's Action Comics #662.

For the previous fifty years, the Superman mythos had a status quo of "Lois Lane loves Superman, but isn't too keen on his secret identity Clark Kent. Meanwhile, Superman loves Lois, but conceals his double life from her for various reasons." But with the reboot of the franchise after Crisis on Infinite Earths the relationships had slowly progressed, and by 1991, Lois had gotten over her Superman obsession enough to realize that she had feelings for Clark, and they got engaged.

Not a hoax, not a dream, not an imaginary story. )

It occurs to me that this kind of blocks off Silver Banshee's appearance in this issue; if at some future point someone's doing a character profile on SB, let me know and I'll trim a few pages at that point to make room.

Otherwise, your thoughts, comments, questions?

Since [insanejournal.com profile] proteus_lives is planning to post NM Annual #2 as part of his Cypher posts before too long, I'd better pre-emptively post NM Annual #1, because of it's particular relevance to Doug! :)

When last we left Doug Ramsey, he'd just been woken up in the middle of the night by Cannonball flying in through his bedroom window to be told that he was a mutant, and taken to the X-Mansion to help the New Mutants establish meaningful dialogue with a disoriented and dangerous Warlock, which he did, which is impressive.
