Here's a bit from IDW's Free Comic Book Day Judge Dredd issue.

The first chapter of Judge Death's first appearance, which is conveniently 1/3rd of the story. (Yes, I could post the whole thing, but I want you to buy the collection.)

Lo, there shall come a Dark Judge )

It's been confirmed over on Newsarama, amongst other places, that Zatanna is getting a new look for her forthcoming appearance in the Justice League title, and in honour of that, I thought I'd post a sample of some of her past outfits, because she's had quite an assortment over the years, and as Freddy Mercury said...

It's a kind of magic... It's a kind of magic! )

No, not Dredd IN shorts, though that's quite the image... but shorts starring Judge Dredd

These are some Judge Dredd newspaper strips from the late 1980's which appeared in the Daily Star newspaper and which were collected... As they are all done-in-one, half a page long strips, I think I can post their entirety without problem.

As promised, this is the second mega-posting to celebrate the end of "Dude(s) in Distress Week", dealing with published images... (This is sort of a "Greatest Hits", as much of it has been posted before)

The history of the "Dude in Distress" in graphical literature is a long and noble one... there are probably medieval woodcuts showing that sort of thing, but as that slightly predates most of the usual area of scans_daily, we'll skip to something vaguely more recent... well, relatively speaking.

LOTS of scans under the cut, but I've used smallish thumbnails so as not to kill your broadband completely! Just stun it slightly...

I've said on this board I don't like it when superhero comics (and other forms of pop culture) make it look like mental illness is some sort of moral failing.

Three actual psychiatrists have taken issue (pun intended) with DC Comics and their description of the mentally ill, especially Batman's rogues gallery. It was originally in the New York Times.

Newsarama covered it as well.

More and four pages from THE KILLING JOKE after the cut.

I’d put off reviewing Joker's Asylum: Two-Face--by David Hine and Andy Clarke--for almost three years. The story was just that maddeningly frustrating to me, as was the fact that many people love the ending.

Just before its release in 2008, I was cautiously optimistic about JA:TF when I read an interview with Hine (the same one wherein he compared Harvey to the cult novel The Dice Man, a comparison which I've ranted about over at that link), in which he mentioned that the story would involve Harvey meeting Holman Hunt, a man with similar facial scarring, thus creating a sort of “man in the mirror” effect.

Quoth Hine: "Essentially, Two-Face sets out to prove, that given the right circumstances, Holman could be converted to Two-Face’s way of thinking. Namely that the universe is a chaotic place where any values we attempt to impose are transient and ultimately meaningless. Take that, Alan Moore!"

Heh. Okay, so he's pretty much saying that he'd pulling a Killing Joke scenario here. We agree on that, yes? Putting aside the fact that it's kinda been done to death, there already HAS been a story like that with Two-Face. But sadly, that amazing story is completely forgotten, so I can't blame Hine for wanting to tell his own tale. Besides, who’s to say there isn’t more potential for that premise?

After all, many people *did* respond to JA:TF, especially thanks to the ending. Hine had high aspirations there, "hoping that this will turn out to be a good old-fashioned twist-in-the-tail type of story that Uncle Creepy would have been proud of." A fine goal, one with horror-geek cred.

So how did he do? You’ll certainly hear my thoughts, but in the end, you must be the judge. I mean that more literally than you might suspect.

Harvey meets the man he could have been--or, looked at it another way, the man who could become him--behind the cut )

Postscript: When I first posted this to About_Faces, my Batman fanblog, David Hine opened an LJ account purely to respond to my review. I was surprised, to say the least, and also a bit nervous. Okay, a LOT nervous. But to his considerable credit, Hine was nothing but civil, and many other comics professionals would do well to follow his example when it comes to interacting with fans. Even passionate, opinionated geeks like me. :)

As such, I think it's only fair to give David Hine the last word here: "... perhaps you'd like to take this into account. This is 'Joker's Asylum'. This isn't me telling a comic book story about Harvey Dent. It's The Joker telling a story about Harvey Dent. Read it again from that perspective."

Dig that great Aparo Two-Face, eh? I have a deep-rooted fondness for Aparo's turtleneck!Harvey.

While the story I bring you today is sadly not drawn by Jim Aparo, it's a fascinating one nonetheless: Two-Face's canon origin from 1977-1987, as seen in DC All-Stars #14: Secret Origins of the Super-Villains. The key twist to this take is the revelation that Harvey Dent wasn't Maroni's real target when the acid was thrown!

See for yourself in... The Secret Origin of Two-Face: Double Take! )

It's an interesting take only because it gives Harvey full cause to see himself (and by extension, everyone else) as pawns in the hands of destiny, and he's cool with that. The "vengeance" mentioned in the teaser image doesn't seem to matter to him either way. He's calm, sometimes even joyous in his madness: a common take on the character, especially in the Bronze Age up to the post-Crisis era, and this story gives it a sensible enough foundation.

However, it's precisely this take which makes Two-Face a character who only works as a supporting figure to make others react. He himself is almost a non-character, because action reveals character, and this Harvey makes no action unless the coin tells him so. One could say this applies Two-Face in general, but smart writers know how to subtly reveal character in other ways, which I'll explore in future posts.

This is why Two-Face was (and to many, still is) an under-loved character: because he was less of a character than a foil. As a result, the Bronze Age which brought Two-Face back into comics is also what kept him from becoming one of the greater presences in DC until the post-Crisis era. Yet even now, some writers go back to this take, which is frustrating. It can make for good stories of other characters, but it doesn't make Harvey himself an interesting character.

Okay, here is my counterargument to my learned friend [personal profile] benicio127 's intriguing, if IMHO slightly flawed, supposition that Jason Todd has better thighs than Dick Grayson.

Whilst I am the last person to deny the intrinsic beauty of any of the Robin's, I simply can't let a claim like that stand! :)

For the sake of fairness, I've limited myself to images from published comics (so no commissions, with two exceptions I'll mention as we go along) or licensing art, which DC acknowledge as being "real".

So in the words of the lad himself, in a fine example of my point...

Of course, whoever wins, we ALL do! :) )

And with that, I rest my case...

Zirk appeared in the strip LASER ERASER AND PRESSBUTON in the British magazine WARRIOR (PRESSBUTTON was an interesting series itself and deserves an in-depth look. The psycho cyborg and his assassin partner began in some underground rock music magazines; Steve Moore (writing as "Pedro Henry") created and scripted the characters, and Alan Moore (writing as "Curt Vile" for some reason) used Pressbutton in an epic called "The Stars My Degradation" (hah).

So. Zirk is this alien who really IS alien. Flying around on his mentally controlled platform, he engages though in various unsavory illegal activities like smuggling. Mostly, he's a complete pervert who is aroused by anything with long appendages, paricularly if they wiggle. Human women appeal to him, but he'll also do it with anything from nightsquid to the severed neck of an ostrich. It's not clear what goes on here, since he apparently has no external organs (not even eyes or mouth). Maybe he does everything telepathically, stimulating his victims' pleasure centers. Or maybe he has inverted organs which emerge at the proper time. It's best not to know, but we should notice that Zirk's partners/victims becomes immensely infatuated with him. ("Love 'em and leave 'em," he smirks.)

Right, so, for no reason at all I've been thinking about Arthurian legends lately and, uh, because I have kind of a one track mind my first thought was, "Hmmm...I wonder if he's ever fought Batman? OHSHI--What about Aquaman?!" And then my brain went *asdfjkl*

But that's not important, what IS important is that I know I've seen scans of heroes crossing over into Arthur's court (somehow) and that's what I'm here for folks! The good crack.

In exchange for some recommendations, I give thee: That time King Arthur came back from the dead and kicked all KINDS of alien invader ass! )
