Hi there. Been a while. I've been reading through old Marvel issues and came across this. It's half a page from Iron Man 246, cover date September 1989. (That's postdated by about 6 months, of course.) It's not a full issue review or anything, but I thought it might be of interest.

Tony has recently been shot, paralyzing him from the waist down. He finds the situation intolerable. He spends a while sulking until he realizes that he can modify his armor to move his legs for him based on neural impulses.

(Of course, it never occurs to him that this is a major revolution in medical technology which could benefit thousands, perhaps millions of people and make him a bundle of money in the process. Because, as TV Tropes puts it, Reed Richards is useless.*

*Warning: TV Tropes link. Do not click unless you have several hours to kill and room for a dozen more browser tabs.)

Instead, he throws himself into being Iron Man while, as much as possible, avoiding being Tony Stark. Then he comes up with an idea:

Half a page )

If only there was some way to search every computer connected to the fledgling Internet for certain "key phrases" and return information based on the results! He could learn all sorts of things about his medical condition and what treatments might be available!

He tasks an employee with writing a "virus" to do it, knowing that it's a difficult task, and (in light of data privacy issues) not entirely ethical.

This is early 1989. Altavista was founded in 1995. Google (the search engine now part of just about everything on the Internet, with questionable privacy ethics) was founded in September of 1998. WebMD was founded in 1996. (And Tony's virus doesn't even try to convince you that you have cancer.)

Tony Stark was, characteristically, years ahead of the curve.

But, of course, it didn't occur to him to patent and monetize that idea, either.

I love it when writers really explore the traumas that motivate villains, show the lurking nightmares distorting their minds, and push the demons in them to the extreme. I mean stuff like Kraven's Last Hunt, or the brilliant Maximum Carnage. Seeing as how Doctor Octopus is currently the star of the Superior Spider-Man, I think it's the right time to take a walk in his trouble mind:

And now it's time for one of my rare "Context is for the weak" posts...

In Amazing Spider-Man 317, the ongoing relationship between two guys and the alien symbiote they have both bonded to comes to a surprising climax...

And by climax I mean... well, you can guess I think )

From the dim and distant shores of 1986 comes a tale of corporate vengeance, bad hair, dodgy moral outrage and short-shorts....

It also features an appearance by one of my favourite c-list heroes...

Surely at least one of those mighr engage your interests? :) )

Well, as my introductory post for DiD Week (Which I don't think we have room left for a tag for I'm afraid), I thought I'd NOT start with the obvious choice, but an example that highlights just about everything I'm looking for in such a scene.

So rather than Batman's chum, I'm opting for Superman's Pal, and from 1995 we find Superman investigating....

Greetings True Believers!

Here are a couple of pages from a 1981 issue of The Invincible Iron Man.

I picked it up on a whim at C2E2 and I'm glad I did.

Enjoy Doom's cross-time learning annex and Tony's "fashion sense"!

Then it'd be this month's Iron Man: Demon in An Armor, which proposed a reality where Tony Stark and Victor von Doom shared a room.

And got on in the way diametric opposites normally do.. )

fredneil.livejournal.com comments,

"Was there ever a story featuring those two that didn't have the basic plot of "Spider-Man fights criminals, Daredevil tries to stop him, Spider-Man thinks Daredevil has switched sides, Spider-Man and Daredevil fight, Daredevil reveals that letting those criminals go was part of a greater plan, Spider-Man feels stupid?" That seems to have turned up a lot in this series."

Why yes, fredneil! There are also stories about Spider-man being framed, with Daredevil being the only one willing to believe in his innocence (as long as he took the lie detector test) and fight for him!

Like this one...(thanks for the segueway!)Read more... )

Scott Lang was Marvel's second Ant-Man and (by my calculations) the person who had the name and the suit for the longest time. He's someone I'd like to see more of around here*, so to contribute to that and to One Perfect Moment week, here is one of his early adventures.

It's from Marvel Team-Up #103 (March 1981), by David Michelinie (writer), Jerry Bingham (penciler), Mike Esposito (inker), Diana Albers (letterer), and Bob Sharen (colorist). The story is called "The Assassin Academy" and, as the title of the comic and the post indicates, involves him teaming up with Spider-Man.

6 pages and 3 panels from a 22-page story.

* could one of the tag wranglers or mods please add the 'char: ant-man/scott lang' tag to this Heroes for Hire post? It could also do with a 'char: power man/luke cage' tag.

Greetings True Believers!

Here is one page from the 1987 Marvel graphic novel "Emperor Doom".

It is pretty much the perfect example of Doom, his strength and why he is THE villain of the Marvel Universe.

ALL HAIL DOOM!

David Michelinie did an unusual split for IRON MAN #144. The first 6 pages are the conclusion to the first "Iron Man Space Armor" story. The remaining 16 pages are a look back as to how Tony Stark met James "Rhodey" Rhodes. Both the "Ultimate" Iron Man continuity and the movies say that Tony and Rhodey became friends at school. Given the history chance in EXTREMIS that switched Southeast Asia to Afghanistan, I'm wondering how Tony and Rhodey met "now."

We get a basic recap of Iron Man's origin, and since this issue came out in 1981, we still have Vietnam.

This 4 1/2 pages of a 16 page story.

Comics Alliance had a great page about the upcoming "One Moment in Time" story, which explains the hows and whys of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson not getting married in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #21. Chris Sims points out that nearly the entire annual is Peter thinking he doesn't really want to get married, and then getting married.
