Arkham Asylum: It Sucks.
Oct. 10th, 2012 04:41 pmAh, Arkham Asylum. Hospital for the mentally ill, prison for supervillains and the most mainstream HP Lovecraft reference in comicbooks! Now, when people talk about Arkham, it's normally connected in some manner with how Batman is "incompetant" in some way for not stopping the Joker, Killer Croc and company from routinely escaping from the alleged SuperMax facility whenever the mood strikes them.
Well today I've decided to have a look at the numerous ways that, really, it's really the Arkham members of staff who are at fault here, not just Batman not having the time to physically watch his rogues 24/7 to ensure they don't go walk about. Plus Halloween is coming up, and this is kind of good subject matter for the season.
Let's begin!

Aug. 20th, 2012 11:38 pmbetween SUPER TASTELESS OFFENSIVE POSTS and ACTUALLY REALLY INSIGHTFUL POSTS, as opposed to their usual "maybe it's a little funny but not really and it's a bit offensive too so..." posts.
Here's something insightful from Monday's update. But I have to warn you, do NOT look at the previous update. It offended even me! And yet, if you agree that Matt Murdock's a bit of a manwhore, it's pretty true.
.... But back to the comic at hand:

Batgirl #11
Jul. 25th, 2012 10:52 amWell, eleven issues in, and I can't say I'm really feeling this book. In fact, I feel like this book is suffering from the same problem as Paul Levitz Worlds' Finest series in terms of Barbara not really getting any interesting or worthwhile villains that match her calibre of skills as a crime-fighter. Like Levitz' baddies, Batgirl's baddies come off as silly and non-threatening despite the fact that some of them are supposed to come from a dark place and are supposed to be dangerous and threatening as a result.
On that note, I'm still not sure what the tone of this book is supposed to be. On the one hand it looks like Simone is pushing for a fun book that's fronted by a badass female lead, but at the same time it looks like she's trying to make some of the characters dark and complex somehow, and it's just not....working. I don't know....it's really feeling like another case of "you can't have your cake and eat it," but that's how this book is coming off at the moment. So far the only baddie I've genuinely enjoyed from this book was Barbara's Talon from the Night of the Owls event since she at least had an interesting backstory (and one that looks like is going to be explored again in future issues judging by the cover solicitation for #13).
I'm really hoping that this book will start to pick up by issue #13. Cause I really, really want to like this book since I like Barbara Gordon as a character. But at the moment I'm only liking her on Birds of Prey (which I should probably start posting scans of again soon). :/
That being said there is at least one character and one upcoming meet-up that look promising.

Apr. 11th, 2012 07:00 pmAfter a nice chat with Dinah in the last issue, Barbara decides to confront one of her major issues....and it's not the *story that shall not be named*

Apr. 5th, 2012 06:14 pmJust a little Dinah/Diana sparring scene from Birds of Prey #68 that makes me happy. Because I need something to take my mind off the colossal awful that Azzarello is inflicting on Wondy.

Feb. 8th, 2012 05:48 pmWhile there were some moments in this book I found a bit silly, all in all I actually liked this issue. Especially the scenes between Gretel and Barbara.
