"This is the freedom of doing a piece of superhero fiction outside the auspices of company ownership or the weight of continuity: the big questions can be asked in a very direct and brutal manner." - Warren Ellis

"I have a ton of stuff coming from Avatar over the next year. In the next year, Avatar will become unrecognisable to people who think they know what the company does. It's going to be good." - Warren Ellis, during publicity for this series

"What interests me the most about John Horus is that, although he Is genuinely frightening, the possibility exists that he’s actually entirely right. That a good man cannot stand idly by and do nothing." - Warren Ellis

"I mean, the broader point of 'Planetary' was very much asking people to look at the roots the genre sprang from and understanding the primal quality of the 20th Century myths we wrote. So when this [story] hit me – and I'm pretty sure I was standing in my garden at three in the morning with a glass of whisky, smoking furiously and swearing at the sky, reduced to waiting for the thunderbolt to hit – it spoke to me not only of the reasons why someone might put on a helmet and find justice their own way, but also why we read these myths of social justice ourselves. Where would you draw the line?" - Warren Ellis

"Half the potential audience is going to see John Horus as the bad guy, and that's not without merit. Half the audience is going to see him as the Good Guy, and I can see where they're coming from too. I take no public position.I'm writing it from both angles at once and letting people make up their own minds." - Warren Ellis

"In a field as well-mined as the superhero genre, it's hard to find questions to ask that aren't also complex or self-referential, and I wanted something direct that stood on its own two feet. I like to try and find something to say about a genre without just finding a navel to gaze into." - Warren Ellis

"[Avatar editor-in-chief William Christensen] bet me I couldn't come up with a high-concept superhero 'event' book that naturally featured all new characters and ideas, but also hit some of the notes of a standard Big Two event program. Huge technical challenge, and I like those, because they keep me sharp. It took me more than a year, mind you... Until I hit on the two ideas. What if a superhero killed the President? And the underpinning: where do you draw the line?" - Warren Ellis

Greetings True Believers!

I have two pages here from an old Robocop mini-series that I was re-reading.

I love Robocop, movies and comics. So enjoy Robocop giving Lewis one of hell of a snog.

(BTW, this mini was based on Frank Miller's original script for Robocop 2. I wish they had used it.)

The eight-issue series Black Summer came about from a bet Warren Ellis made with a friend. The challenge was for Ellis to come up with a superhero story that (1) had a sufficiently big plot of the sort you'd see in Marvel and DC's event comics, yet (2) still did something new with the genre. This is what he came up with.
