Now, I'm 25 and my DC is the continuity that ran from Legends in 1986 to Flashpoint in 2011. Out of that I got Starman, I got what I think is the best run of JLA ever written (thanks Grant Morrison), I got so many amazing Batman stories with art from greats like Jim Aparo and Graham Nolan, and a run of Superman where he ended up with the woman he was supposed to end up with, and they lived happily... ever... well. You get the idea.

Spoilers for DC Comics from Infinite Crisis onwards under the cut, but this will all dovetail into some stuff about Power Girl.

For the longest time, I'd always thought of Black Mask - especially the 2000s-era take on him - as Hush, but even worse. Hush might have been a huge Villain Sue with artificial competence and a wholly unoriginal composition, but at least he had the grace to leave the Bat-books (temporarily) as soon as Loeb was done with his debut story. Black Mask had all of the above (possible exacerbated by the fact that he was previously an unremarkable C-lister in Batman's rogues gallery) with the added caveat that editorial was in love with him for some reason, so we got him shoved down our throats as TEH MOST BADASS CRIMELORD EVAH for most of Gotham's mid-2000s status quo.

I'm not going to recap the disgusting mess that was "War Games" here - there are plenty of posts on this community devoted to covering that already - but suffice to say, BM got very little love from the female readership, and his fans in the male readership basically amounted to people impressed that he'd killed a Robin.

But then I sat down to Judd Winick's run on Batman, and realized that holy shit, apparently the newbie writer on the block agreed with me.

For my first post (hopefully), here's a delightful scene from the Batman: Reborn era!

I'll post a decent Bruce one later, promise - I just miss Dick!Bats a lot.

Food for Thought: Jason Todd is in Arkham Knight! A story DLC, though, but I'll take it. Sad Rocksteady won't be overstaying their welcome - I'd have loved to see their versions of the rest of the Bat-Famiy.

Yeah. I had a bunch more "Villains Being Awesome" moments to post, but there are so, so few days of October left. Ergo, I decided to lump several of them into one post!

As a last-ditch effort to establish some kind of connecting theme beyond "Batman villains", I chose the three villains featured in what popular opinion has deemed the worst Batman film to date, Batman & Robin. If anyone deserves to have their awesomeness trumpeted and the reputations that that movie gave them destroyed, it's these three. And I say that as a guy who's usually apathetic (at best) to two of them.

Ever have one of those days where you just need a good cry? Want to read something that just cuts deep, but leaves you feeling refreshed for having felt something so strongly afterwards?

Yeah... I gotcha covered.

My top three. )

I didn't think it was possible for this book to get anymore problematic, but I stand corrected.

WARNING: for graphic eroticised violence.

Issues #3 and #4 of Batwing take some time off the present-day Massacre plot and to show David Zavimbe's years as a child soldier.

In this issue, we have:

1. Selina going back to making cat references.
2. Preferring to deal with the pains of childbirth over dislocating her shoulder.
3. Catwoman sucking hard at the 'being a criminal' lifestyle.
4. Aeka interpreting all of this as foreshadowing a future encounter with Selina Jr.

4 Pages worth of easter eggs that make Aeka smile :} )

We learn a little bit more about Selina's past and are introduced to more people in her life. At best it appears as though the Frank Miller prostitute origin has been retconned out of continuity. So I guess one point for Winick?

4 pages out of 21, plus interview with Judd Winick and Guillem March )

No violent anonymous shagging this time...(well maybe a bit of snogging), but there's still a WHOLE lot of violence, and I mean LOTS of it.

It's enough to say even Batman doesn't approve )
