So it's come to my attention that many folks haven't ever heard of Freight Train who is acting as the muscle for the current Outsiders team bringing in some new blood to the team.

He debuted in issue 30 of the series but his origin story wasn't explained until issue 35 where we discovered how he received his powers.

When he first showed up he was explicitly stated as working for Simon Stagg. Simon Stagg is the father of Sapphire Stagg, Rex Mason/Metamorpho's ex-wife. Java, one of Simon Stagg's workers was also in love with Sapphire and hated Rex for taking "his" girl from him. Sapphire of course loved Rex and so on and since then Sapphire has somehow died very recently. (If anybody knows how that'd be nice to know)

Some issues ago Java even tried killing Metamorpho knocking him out while holding the Orb of Ra (the orb that gave Rex his powers but also hurts Rex if he's near it) and dumping him into Chemo.

Now in the present Metamorpho's been saved by his team mates Owlman and Freight Train and the three go to find Simon Stagg (or Java technically since he's always with Simon) but Freight Train apparently betrays them and lets Simon Stagg and group capture the two.

(Whoo boy, hope that made sense to you folks)

The big plan Simon has is to use Black Lightning as a power source and with research he based off of the Black Rings from Blackest Night to resurrect Sapphire.

So I thought I was done with the Bloodlines/New Bloods posts for a while but I remembered I promised to post some of this Spring Break Special for [livejournal.com profile] werehawk who wanted to see more of Layla. Can't blame him she was pretty fun.

So here's her appearance in the issue.

And this'll be my last Bloodlines and related posts for a while since I'm running out of material rather quickly. Probably hunt for more when I go to another con.

She might not be Lobo but she'll still get the job done... )

And so our Bloodlines event comes to its surprising conclusion.

We saw the DC heroes captured by the newly risen Taker, all except Flash and Superman. Now it's time for a new group of heroes to get their butts kicked, I mean save the day.

One (well two sorta) New Bloods powers proved utterly key in this story, can you guess which tough guy saves the day?

The Bloodlines have ended. The heroes of the DCU are now finally able to assemble against the Parasite threat, but will it be enough? Or will it be the fall of Earth?

18 pages of a 56 page story.

I have to also warn you that while the art of the Annuals each had specific teams who were used to the books they were on...  but the artists who worked on Bloodbath varied, and the art seemed very rushed at times. (Including having a page that I won't post with Martian Manhunter on it that hurts my eyes)

And you thought the Parasites were bad? )

The Bloodlines conclude with this annual! We head back to L.E.G.I.O.N (they're the folks who first investigated the Parasite ship in the Lobo Annual via sending Lob and Layla to find out what was up).

So...just where did these Parasites come from anyway?

We're nearly done with the Annuals of the Bloodlines events and we reach my favorite of the New Bloods, Chimera.

Admittedly my love of this annual aside from Chimera herself was that I'm also a big fan of the Team Titans ( well except Mirage anyway) so it certainly helped me like Chimera as well.

Another of my favorite issues from the Bloodlines event.

In a bit of a confusing event this issue was less about the heroes fighting off a Parasite (or really at all) and more about what happens when you make two New Bloods at the same time one good and one bad, but with another twist.

18 pages of a 56 page story.

Some odd art in the story and fairly uneven but I can't say I disliked it.

You know, reaching this issue makes me realize just how much of Bloodlines I've posted already, totally thought I had a few more issues before I reached the Demon Annual.

Can't say I've ever been a big Garth Ennis fan, this might even be the only comic I own that he worked on, still it was surprisingly amusing.

Here's another one of my favorite New Bloods. I can't say his look was all too appealing to me but his powers were a lot of fun and much like with Myriad I'm a fan of giving villains other heroes to fight. Eclipso for example has always just had himself (Bruce Gordon his host) or Spectre as a main villain for the most part barring stories like the current JLA arc where he fights everyone in the DCU for some reason.

Plus it was fun seeing some the New Bloods team up this issue.

Here we come to the final stretch of the Bloodlines epic. The Outbreak and Earthplague have passed, now the Earth faces its Deathstorm. The Parasites have become public knowledge, though that has helped the heroes very little thus far.

In this part we get to meet the heir to a weapons manufacturing company Andrew Van Horn.

The final issue of the Earthplague portion of the Bloodlines annuals introduced the odd super being  known as Mongrel.

To say he has anger issues would be an understatement. This issue has a few things that bug me and would throw many off so I'll try to make it as clear as I can. Their are a few times jumps around in the story and perhaps most annoyingly is the effort to try explaining Hawkman's apparent status quo at the time, which well, I have no idea about and am ignoring it as best as I can.

Ah Metropolis. At this time during the Reign of the Supermen we saw four Supermen appear and defend it. The Parasites have returned to face its protector(s) again. Thankfully we have...oh damn, it's that Metropolis Kid protecting us. Yeah, we're gonna need backup there.

In this installment of Bloodlines we get to probably my second favorite of the male Bloodliners (after Joe Public if anyone really wanted to know, or it might be a tie between 'em I tend to go back and forth).

This issue is nice in that it portrays a pretty realistic look on a guy who gets powers after his life has turned to hell, at least to me.

Ah this issue. I knew I'd reach it sooner or later.

While I love Bloodlines and it's characters there's one that I'm not surprised never made a return appearance. The New Blood known simply as Jamm. I can't say I hate his story or powers themselves but how the character handled said powers and acted was certainly groan inducing not to mention his powers were also a bit too much.

Hmm, I'll admit I wanted to kinda skip this New Blood. His power was amazingly stupid and very ill used even in this book. Though I guess at least one hero had to be gifted with powers that are...well...useless.

Meet Geist the Twilight Man. That's. Yeah.

I'm sure you've noticed the trend of how the Bloodlines Annuals tend to go by now with long drawn out appearances and attacks and the like. It's rather odd how this issue plays the Parasites angle and how little actual battling there is and  how much story there is instead which I'm guessing was a staple of the Mike Grell Green Arrow run.

Well with my previous post (with Lionheart and the JLI) the portion known as the Outbreak has ended we now begin the Earthplague portion of Bloodlines.

Admittedly this story seems a bit  dated given the technology focus of the story but it's still one of my favorites. Now watch in awe (or is it despair) as Robin meets the Psyba-Rats.

For the entirety of the crossover the Parasites attacks were very US based (as the aliens ship crashed near Metropolis), the only attacks that occurred outside of the US was this annual in which some of the Parasites come to England. (Though the latest New Blood related story seems to imply despite what we see of the Parasites attack patterns they likely did go global but that's a post for another day)

Some posts back we saw how Pagan, BatBruce and Joe Public reacted when a Bloodlines parasite struck Gotham. That was then....

Now Gotham has been taken over by Bane, the Batman was broken and a new Dark Knight patrols the city as their must always be a Batman.

It's time for the new Batman to meet New Blood.
