"It was almost like a dry run for me. I had Frankenstein in mind and I wanted to do it. I had an idea what I wanted the drawings to look like; and 'The Muck Monster'—and a few other things I did for Warren—were the embryonic version of the penwork that finally showed up in Frankenstein." - Bernie Wrightson

Very sad to hear about the passing of Bernie Wrightson. In his memory, this was a story he wrote and illustrated for Eerie #68 that would serve as the groundswell for what would arguably be his magnum opus, the illustrated version of Frankenstein.

So I go to bed last night hearing the news of Chuck Berry's passing at age 90, which is deeply sad, and wake up this morning to read that Bernie Wrightson has passed away at 68, from brain cancer, which is heartbreaking.

He hadn't been well of late, and had cancelled all future convention appearances, but I don't think we'd expected to lose him so soon.

I'm sure I speak for the Mod Team, and indeed everyone on scans_daily, when we send our condolences to his wife, family and many, many friends.

And of course, if you would care to share your favourite Bernie Wrightson story as a tribute, that would be much appreciated.

but one whose passing is unlikely to engender anything like the heartfelt tribute of other recent losses as his work was... well "Extreme" is understating it

Jack T Chick, creator of the infamous Chick Tracts, has died at the age of 92.

Very much an American thing, thankfully for the rest of the world )

I just discovered artist Jack Davis passed away a few days ago at the age of 91. He's generally remembered for his work on MAD but he also worked on EC's horror titles. Here's one I posted a few years back, "Let the Punishment Fit the Crime" from 'Vault of Horror' #33.

Muhammad Ali, one of the world's best-known athletes, passed away yesterday at age 74.

In his memory, I offer an excerpt from the profile, "The Greatest," in The Big Book of the '70s. Script by Jonathan Vankin, art by Graham Manley. One page of three.

It is now official that Darwyn Cooke passed away this morning from the cancer he was announced as being treated for just yesterday, and at the ridiculously, almost offensively young age of 53.

The genius behind New Frontier and noted for his work on Catwoman, The Spirit, Parker, The Twilight Children and many, many more lost his battle with cancer.

His style was unique and glorious. Retro, yet modern, it was instantly recognisable, and called up echoes of Will Eisner, Bruce Timm and Jack Kirby and was at the same time absolutely his own.

He was also known to be an utter professional and a good friend. Check out your favourite artists on Facebook and there's not a one of them who hasn't been hit by this.

I know I speak for the Mod Team and indeed everyone on Scans_Daily when i express my sympathies and thoughts for his family and many, many friends.

To honour his passing, may I suggest posting your favourite examples of his work, in this, or other threads if it seems appropriate. And if you wish to use the term, and donations to the Hero Initiative and The Candian Cancer Society

For my part, I will repost something i first put up in 2014, when the solicitations for an entire month of covers from DC had his work as wonderful variants... the only time I have actually considered buying a book for it's variant cover. I still hope these get collected.

I don't often swear on scans_daily, but as Mr Cooke put it yesterday when his condition was announced; "FUCK CANCER!"

Such a loss.... )

"When we originally plotted this story, Bullock and Montoya were supposed to be the main protagonists, but after Paul turned in his script, I decided I wanted to put Batgirl in it, too (I love to draw pretty girls, in case you didn't know). As I recall, Paul's reaction was 'WHAT!!??!!' I explained how I thought we could do it and subsequently wrote most, if not all, of her dialogue myself directly on the boards. I think Paul was ultimately happy with the final result, but you'd have to ask him." --Bruce Timm, Afterword, Batman: Mad Love and Other Stories

Once upon a time, there was Batman: The Animated Series. And it was good.

Then someone decided to shake up the status quo, slap more action-ready redesigns on everybody, replace half the writing staff, and tie it all to the Superman cartoon airing at the time. And the results were decidedly horrible mixed.

Somewhere closer to the positive end of that scale, we have 1996's Batgirl Adventures #1, sort of a pseudo-sequel to 1995's Batman Adventures Holiday Special as well as another prototype of TNBA's Girls' Night Out. Once again, there's not much plot other than "the ladies of Gotham kick lots of ass, add one cup of humor and stir", but it's a formula that's made Paul Dini plenty popular, and I'd be lying if I said I weren't fond if it.

(Doesn't hurt that the yellow-and-black look is one of my favorite BG costumes of all time, either.)

Oh, there was a girl from Gotham...

That walked the hero's road,

For the sake of her old father...

It's to her I sing this ode.

With ra-zor sharp intellect...

She struck down every foe.

Joy and inspiration,

It's these to her we owe...

Gray and blue...

Gray and blue...

The girl from Gotham wore the gray and blue...

So of course, this comic is best known for introducing a sociopathic criminal. C'est la vie. )

By the way, I'll be going through a lot of Babsgirl stuff this week, so if there's anything you want me to keep my grubby little hands off of, speak up now. Thank you.

To kick off our little tributes to the inimitable Ms. Craig, here's a fun little scene from one of the recent issues of Batman '66, and a glimpse into what might have been had the show been made with more... modern standards.

Admittedly, the story in itself isn't really worth picking up; its being a one-parter means the central joke (imagine Mad Men, only with 200% more Batman villains!) is flat and inconsistent, and I'm not really satisfied with how Barbara ultimately won, even though it was nice to see a story try to emphasize Barbara Gordon's competence over Batgirl's.

But hey, you look me in the eye and tell me one other place where you can see BG beat up four supervillains at the same time.

As you are most likely aware, Yvonne Craig, the actress who originated the roles of Barbara Gordon and Batgirl in the 1966 Batman TV series, passed away last week after a fight with cancer.

In light of this sad milestone, it would seem apt for scans_daily to join other fans around the world in mourning her loss, but also to celebrate the character she breathed life into, and set the standard for for decades to come.

Finally found something for my Joe Kubert "In Memoriam" post.

Among the characters Kubert's art graced is one Sergeant Frank Rock, who was the star of "Our Army at War" for many years.

Three pages of eleven from the lead story, "300th Hill", and a bonus.

Nothin's easy for Easy Company! )

Next time, probably something from the public domain.
