I've been enjoying the Jem and the Holograms series (and so was sorry to hear the series will be cancelled with #26), and LOVING the Misfits mini (seriously, I've held off on posting anything from #2 because I need the 1/3 rule to make the required impact)

And so, at ECC and courtesy of AV Club, IDW announced what will be taking it's place and... well... it's not quite what anyone was expecting...

It's been confirmed by IDW that the ongoing Jem and the Holograms series will end with #26

But in the words of the song from the show,

This is Farewell. Farewell But Not for Ever. )

It almost pains me that this charming story has to be trimmed down to four pages, but as it's part of the ongoing narrative and it's less than 4 weeks old I feel I have to.

I DO encourage you to get hold of a copy, it really is rather sweet and fun, and I'm having to completely ignore the subplot about Shana's so far absence of anything approaching a love life.

For those who might think the Jem comic book is too bright and shiny, well the third arc is going in completely the other direction as we meet

And the end of issue #4, The Holograms are performing at a benefit concert. But, OH NO! Clash has sabotaged the set and the lights are about to fall on Jem!

Congratulations to the USA! Three days since the SCOTUS made their historic ruling, and you still haven't all be struck down by divine lightning yet! (Clearly you're just not trying hard enough, so you know what they say "Practice! Practice! Practice!!)

And to celebrate, three pages from Jem and the Holograms #4

It's like Romeo and Juliet... except with powerchords and lesbians, and hopefully a lower mortality rate. )

...as a Truly OUTRAGEOUS post

(Sorry, I had to get that out of my system and better now than later)

Now as you know, I pride myself on being the manliest of men, the most testosterone-driven pile of XY chromosome derived masculinity as you could ever hope to meet...

And like all manly men, I have an unfeasily large interest in a mid 1980's cartoon series called "Jem", a series with an almost entirely female cast (only three regular male characters over the whole series; the heroine's boyfriend, the evil manager, and a rival band's lead singer in the last run of episodes) and featuring more female agency than most other cartoon series since the mid 1980's combined! In the words of the theme song there was 'Glamour and Glitter, Fashion and Fame', but also adventure, romance, a heroine who is an executive as well as a pop star, some sci fi in the form of her hologram projecting earrings, exotic locations and... well, pretty much everything you'd hope for in a cartoon (and no ccomedy relief pets!)

I posted some of the preview character bios, and also a little sample of #2 a few weeks back, but those are the only posted pages on S-D do far (somewhat to my surprise), so I though that, now #3 is out, I would make a slightly longer look at it, because by heck it deserves one.

Only the Beginning! )

And issue 2 ot IDW's visually stunning revamp of quintessential 1980's cartoon Jem has a preview for issue 2 up here, and we meet my favourite girl group (outside of The Pointer Sisters)

One of the trademarks of the Jem cartoon was the musical numbers were done in the stle of proper MTV musc videos, and when we meet the Misfits in the opening pages it seems they're sort of taking the same route

And it looks awesome.. )

Now amongst my other varied and sundry interests (and more of them in a forthcoming post), I have a soft spot for the old Jem cartoon (Which I now realise is almost 30 years old)... or more particularly for a couple of the aspects of the cartoon.

For those too young to remember Jem, it was the (and I say this now to avoid accidentally stumbling upon the term later on) "Truly Outrageous" story of Jerrica Benton, CEO of Starlight Records, who moonlighted as up and coming rock star Jem (With her little sister and friends making the group "Jem and the Holograms".

At any rate... there's a live action movie out next year (Which based on word of mouth is a little more low key and doesn't even include rival band The Misfits by most accounts), and in advance of that IDW have a new comic, and... it's not quite what I was expecting in terms of style....

and I LOVE that it's not what I was expecting. )
