Free Comic Book Day has been and gone for another year, but that doesn't mean that there aren't some bargains to be found. Top Cow have bloody loads of free issues available on their website. I'd recommend all of Think Tank and I'm going to take a punt on Madame Mirage, Aphrodite IX and IX Generation. If you really like what you see, spend some Cash Money on it at the store.

The first thing that I picked up was the Witchblade Animated issue, but the late Darwyn Cooke and Paul Dini. Somebody pointed it my way because it's got The Magdalena in it.

For those of you unfamiliar with her, The Magdalena is the descendant of Mary Magdalene and Christ, and is armed with the spear that pierced Christ's side. She's a legacy, working for the Catholic Church, and there have been generations of Magdalenas. I would love to read a book about the medieval Magdalena, like Lake of Fire, but I don't see it happening.

I'm moderately intrigued by her new series, though I'm not enjoying it as much as Vol.3 )

I'm still not quite sure about Tim Seeley on Witchblade. He took over as the writer as of issue #151, and I'm not sure he quite has a grip on Sara's personality yet. It doesn't help that he's a fiend for grossouts, as anyone who reads Hack/Slash could tell you, and he's injected a lot more random nudity into the book.

There are a couple of things I like about his opening arc, though, such as a brief interjection in the latest issue, featuring a meeting between three past bearers of the Witchblade, Darkness, and Spear of Destiny.

Following on from yesterday, I bring you some more Witchblade (issues 63 and 64), feat. Magdalena. Whose name, in this incarnation (legacy heroine), is Patience.

This post also includes one of my favourite comics panels ever, drawn by Francis Manapul. WHY was he the first peciller whose name I knew? LEARN! SEE! WONDER!

Way back when I put up the last requests post (the next one is COMING SOON), I promised some of Francis Manapul's run on Witchblade to somebody. I forget who. I am sorry.

I just managed to get those scans done. The quality is weird and I don't know why. Better late and dodgy than never??

One thing I didn't notice at the time but find wanting in hindsight, is that whilst I was reading Witchblade in.. 2002-2003?.. and in the live-action television show as well, Sara doesnt really have that much in the way of female support characters. Her flake sister shows up sometimes, and there was that daughter of her dead best friend, and every now and then Lara Croft would drop by.. but the day to day, comic to comic stuff was pretty dudefilled.

So it was always nice when another lady did come and visit - such as here. I picked these scans in particular because it's also always neat to see some evidence of in-world "rules" when you're dealing with supernatural jiggery pokery.

I'm not that fond of the way Top Cow chose to advertise it, but maybe you are.
