Back in 2001, Marvel Comics decided to do something a little different with their X-Force title, which up to that point had been very Nineties. So the main cast was apparently killed off in an explosion, and a year passed in-universe.

The X-Force name had been taken over by media mogul Spike Freeman, who built a multimedia franchise around a team of television-friendly mutants who performed high-profile missions on camera and lived like celebrities. The reality TV thing was still relatively fresh back then, and worth lampooning. We were introduced to this new, not precisely heroic X-Force...and then most of the characters were killed off in the first issue of the new direction, to be replaced by new people entirely.

7 1/3 pages of 21 from X-Force #120, "X-Force: Snikt!", which picks up after a fairly disastrous first mission for the new lineup. Possible trigger warning for implied attempted sexual assault.

The protagonists come pre-broken. )

So while viewing this preview for X-Force #7, it reminded me of a video I recently saw. But I'll get to that at the end, first, the scans.

Remember how I said Liddleville was used in comic series other than the Fantastic Four? How about the previous X-FORCE seres?

X-FORCE #63 had Tabitha Smith, aka Meltdown, waking up in the town of Liddleville. But no one else is around. No Lotus-Eater Machine this time.

Because Scans_Daily 3.0 has been criminally short on scans from Peter Milligan's X-Force run, I seek to correct that with these scenes, taken from X-Force #124, with guest artist Darwyn Cooke on art duties.

I loved this run in many ways, which both satarized the cult of celebrity and the media, but also managed to make stereotypes into strongly defined characters in between the high body count. I always thought it was a bold move of Marvel to associate this sort of material with brand X. Also, I think I'm right in saying, had the first on-panel gay kiss in Marvel comics, several years before the media claimed that was in the recent X-Factor issue.

Normally this looks so ho-hum, especially if this is supposed to be tied into Necrosha. However, a panel on the preview got me thinking of those good ol' boys who are "expendable and indestructible". CosmicBookNews has the preview.
