Forever War: GI Joe 80

This is my island in the sun...

On the Cobra side of things, Dr. Mindbender and Firefly are trying to claim the island (and get in good with Cobra Commander). Both factions throw everything they can muster onto the island.

But Cobra has already landed mobile artillery.

The Maggots are able to fire into the Joes' cover.

When the Rolling Thunder finally arrives.

So we all learned a valuable lesson: if you're going in the water, make sure you're with Firefly, not Kate Winslet.

And with this, G.I. Joe outlasts its little bro title Transformers. And it's not going to slow down any time soon.
(Well, okay. Kind of technically if we also count the Headmasters miniseries. But we won't!)

Meet the new toys! The All-New, All-New, All-New New Joes!
... I know it's kind of clichéd (among other things) to say the first batch of anything is always the best and everything that came later is awful and terrible and wrong and deserves to be forgotten but...
We've got a guy with a flamethrower, a guy who clearly likes face paint way too much, whatever Muskrat's deal is, and... a baseball player with a grenade launcher.
So maybe in this case any comparisons to earlier batches of Joes are not entirely unfair.
(But hey, they came out of their island adventure all alive.)

Funny, Terry Pratchett would later write a book about a war over this exact concept, right down to the "We should have so that they don't have it" rhetoric and even gur prffngvba bs pbasyvpg pbvapvqvat jvgu gur vfynaq fvaxvat onpx orarngu gur bprna.
