Forever War: GI Joe 144
Issue 143 is a fill-in and I'm not really in the mood for it (though it is a rare latter-day Joe story that isn't about fighting Cobra). Issue 144 is the secret origin of Snake Eyes--well, like, one-fifth of the secret origin, because dude has backstory. Dude's backstory has backstory.
We start off in Milleville/Millville, immediately after the Transformers crossover. There's no real attention paid to how they're dealing with a town full of people who have spent months if not years as Cobra 'zombies,' but since it's not worth mentioning, I guess it's not giving them a problem. Time for a flashback!

I do like that, for all the sturm und drung of Snakes' backstory, his scarring is the result of simple bad luck and institutional failing (and not the ten guys who have been hired to kill him at this point). Ironically what Cobra Commander rails against and yet is now responsible for. It's like a theme or something.
The rest of the issue is the OG Joes Rainbow Sixing it to save a hostage...

The gag here is that Snakes knows who the real Strawhacker is because it's his would-be brother-in-law, George Strawhacker, but... why wouldn't the Joes know what the hostage they're trying to rescue looks like?

It's another one of those odd half-continuity things Hama does, where it all lines up, but it basically amounts to a one-off character who immediately died despite probably being entitled to at least a little plot armor. I wouldn't mind him getting a resurrection, just because it seems so messy for him to both be so important to the plot and yet not matter at all. But that's me, I'm weird, I'm not even one of those rabid Firefly fans this comic was geared to for about a year.

Note here that Wild Bill and Doc are both affiliated with the Joes in a support capacity long before their official assignment as of issue 11, making them part of a select few to help the team prior to joining. I think other stories like Declassified would do the same for a few others--Ace and Chuckles come to mind as soldiers/operatives who may have caught Hawk's eye... (Declassified, as the "secret origins" of the original 13, showcased how many of the first team came to Hawk's attention.)
I like the deep lore, I do.
