For Halloween week, a Halloween tale, from #20 of SUPER FRIENDS, which continues to be leagues more awesome than the majority of DC's adult fare.

So it's that time of year again and a small child dressed as Batman is narrating a scary story to his buddies - a story, naturally, about the Super Friends, and what happened one Halloween when they got called out to a parade.

Way to not notice the giant shaggy monster which is rampaging right in front of you, guys.

Diana tries to lasso him and he chucks her over the horizon, Clark tries a wrestle hold and gets a sore arm for his trouble, even Bruce's knockout gas can't drop the beast. So while John is off making sure Diana's okay, the other Super Friends decide knowledge is power and get the lowdown on the Shagster from Professor Frankenstein Zagarian there. (Armenian mad scientist, guys. I'm so proud. :D) It's the same as mainline canon, but for those who don't know:

Can Sholly Fisch write mainstream Wonder Woman now please?

So beauty tames the savage beast. But Bruce makes the quite sensible observation that they still need to get him out of town somehow without making him flip out again, and there's lots of civilians between here and there to muck things up.

No fear, though, Arthur has a plan!

Narrating Batman Kid there didn't impress his friends much with this story, they think he's making it up. But then his uncle pops his head in and turns out to be none other than the mad doctor Zagarian himself!

Upon further questioning by the kids, he reveals the true ultimate fate of the Shaggy Man.

So, he's Bigfoot now. Dumping him in Hal Jordan's back yard. I like it.

Which begs the question: if Shaggy Man baked, what sort of cookies would he make? I vote for oatmeal chocolate-chip.

I vote for chocolate chocolate-chip, because they're damn awesome cookies and his fur is roughly the same color.

I also like the use of Rutland, Vermont's annual Halloween parade. Super Friends really makes good on DC's long history.

Just don't mention it. Wonder Woman tried once, and he just shooed her off saying "I had no child hood". Boohoo!

If DC is making Robotman wear "the shorts" I can't believe they would let Shaggy just hang out like that.

He has nothing TO hang out - he's a sexless entity. Technically, he's an 'it'. With Robotman, it makes a bit more sense, since he used to be human back in the day, so it's understandable that he'd be a little embarrassed in a naked form, even if it's a robotic naked form.

Being nice, the ultimate weapon against villainy! Honestly, Super Friends and Tiny Titans are about the only DC books I can read on a regular basis each month and never get frustrated or feel rage.

Ah, finally we get Chewbacca's secret origin! It doesn't cover the part where he meets up with Han though...

Yay, it's been a while since Diana used my second favorite of her powers (first is when she uses the bracers). Very Sun Tzu, warrior. Those who know when to fight and when not to fight are victorious. :)

Heh, John uses the ring for spooky flashlight effect, and Wally's marshmallow is on fire.

The Shaggy Man is a cool character and all, but his name kinda throws me, given that there's a character in the Oz books who is also called that. Therefore, whenever I read the name, my brain immediately goes, 'oh, right, the Oz character'. So I'm reading 'lovable tramp and wanderer, friend of Ozma, owner of the Love Magnet', and I'm seeing 'RAAAARRRGGHH! SHAGGY MAN SMASH!' It's a tad weird - it's like eating gingerbread and raw onion at the same time.
