I see it more as there being lots of valid interpretations of a character but we're only allowed to have one in most media.
DC announced a live action Batman movie with Robin in it and that's huge because it's been nearly 30 years since the last one.
People want to see married Spider-Man as a main character again but I think a lot of us would settle for Peter not starting over in high school every time.
Ultimate Spider-Man is them trying something different with the characters...even if I'm worried they'll fall into old patterns that will turn people off the series soon.
