Took this from Phantom Stranger 41, second volume, because I can't seem to find the first volume, and 41 was the end of the second volume, so hey!

Bonus Deadman, as well. The Phantom Stranger story is only 12 pages, so only 4 pages are posted.

In the previous issues, a man who knew about Deadman had framed the Stranger as the man who murdered him. Eventually figuring out that he'd been tricked, Deadman used the information to find the man who REALLY murdered him. However, the Stranger decided to interfere, chastising Deadman when he might have killed an innocent in his pursuit of vengeance, and tricking him into sacrificing his murderer's life to protect another, rather than get the extended bloody revenge he preferred.

In a heated rage, Deadman accuses the Stranger of being high and mighty perfect, so the Stranger teleports them both to an institute of the blind, saying that he has mistakes here. Then he vanishes. Curious, Deadman follows a couple in sight in front of the institute, one Cassandra Croft and Adam Shapiro.

Et cetera, et cetera, an evil magician named Seine who'd been blinded by the Stranger was ALSO at that institute, and his demon attacks Croft. Deadman and the Stranger quarrel, but destroy the demon. This goes unseen by Cassandra Croft, who laments that she thought she'd sensed the presence of an old friend. She prefers to refer to the Stranger as 'Friend'. End of last issue.

This is the start of issue 41.

Well, you'd be annoyed too, if someone started monologuing to thin air right in front of you. This isn't the first time the Stranger's done this with Deadman, either.

It's stuff like that, though, that convinces me that the Stranger knows he has an audience.

Cut away to evil blind magician who's captured Cassandra Croft (again). Adam Shapiro is shortly rendered unconscious, and the magician makes a new deal with the Elder demons to sacrifice Cassandra, be unblinded and become superduper--so he can kill the Stranger!

Cassandra Croft is psychic (she 'sees' that way) and calls for help with her mind..

Does that count as Strangerdickery? Making fun of someone because they're dead?

Also the Stranger DID get vivisected in this volume, and his heart transplanted, though everything promptly vanished soon after, so maybe he was dead at this point. As dead as he gets, anyway.

The evil magician kicks the Stranger's butt, so the Stranger summons help in the form of Deadman! Out of his hat, no less.

Adam Shapiro's body turns out to be fairly helpless because he's blind, apparently, and gets killed by Seine. The Stranger gets pissed and does one of those 'gather everybody's feelings together' kind of spells and whacks Seine with it.

Seine is beaten, Cassandra is saved, the Elder demons are pissed, so they suck Seine into their own dimension. Time for Deadman to blame the Stranger for not being all-powerful again..

Ta-DA! The end.

Second. I never realized he had white hair before. In fact I never really thought about it.

Yup, always the white hair, and always the ultra-cool least until Madame Xanadu, and the historical Strangers, wearing different headgear to suit the times, which is still cool. The only 'dispute' was eyes vs. mask, and that's been decided in favor of having the hat brim create a mask effect due to shadow.

He also appears hatless in Cooke's "New Frontier". And smiling, no less.

Huh. I just realized that the Phantom Stranger looks A LOT like The Steward from Days Missing. Certainly a coincidence, though.

More and more I think the true magically crossover title between Marvel and DC would need to feature Dr. Strange and the Phantom Stranger as leads.

Or Phantom Stranger, the Watcher, and a large tub of popcorn! "You going to interfere?" "Can't."

A quick look at wiki says this is the right one: volume 1 was only 6 issues (there was also a 4 issue mini in the 80's.)

It's curious that this story is a team up between Deadman and the Phantom Stranger, given that the Blackest Night issue will feature both of them as well.

Thanks, and it's good to see some of the magic side of DC.

Hooray, P.S.! :D

Also, Cassandra Craft. BONUS! I love Cassandra Craft. She's neat. Though her fashion sense leaves something to be desired... perhaps in time, hanging out with Zatanna and the Stranger will psychically rub off on her, and she'll start to dress in a less strange color.

Well, yeah, but you'd think that the Stranger, with his dazzlingly pimptastic sense of style, could poof her up some less hideous outfits. Or at least poof that outfit into a darker, cooler color. XD

Not just that, but blind in the Seventies, when any clothing one might randomly grab off a rack could look like the costume of a circus performer.

Love Carrillo's depictions of Deadman and Stranger. I somehow feel that this was a high point for both characters. These days, these two seem to get the short end of the deal.
