[personal profile] kingrockwell posting in [community profile] scans_daily
So, I was mostly looking for an excuse to post the DC solicits for May when I stumbled across the best news!

I, ZOMBIE #1
On sale MAY 5
32 pg, FC, $1 US
MATURE READERS
Written by CHRIS ROBERSON •Art and cover by MICHAEL ALLRED
1:10 Variant cover by DARWYN COOKE
Gwen Dylan is a gravedigger in an eco-friendly cemetery…and a zombie detective. Once a month, she has to eat a human brain – both to keep from going all “Night of the Living Dead,” and to keep her own memories intact. As a result, Gwen’s mind is crowded with the dead person’s thoughts. And lately, she feels compelled to fulfill their final requests. Torn between a mysterious mummy and a dashing young monster-hunter, Gwen is set for adventures beyond imagination! A were-terrier, a swinging ’60s ghost and a pack of paintball blasting vampires complete the cast of I, ZOMBIE.
Written by World Fantasy Award finalist Chris Roberson (CINDERELLA: FROM FABLETOWN WITH LOVE) with art by Eisner Award-winning superstar artist Michael Allred (X-Statix, Madman), I, ZOMBIE is a monster of a tale with razor-sharp prose and powerful pop artistry.
Don’t miss this special debut issue launching Vertigo’s next monster hit, priced at just $1.00!

That Cook cover really should be the real one while the other one is the varient.

Yes, but then people would open it expecting to see more cute wonderful Cooke art and go "aww... it's Allred."

When expecting Cook art? Quite a few I'd think, or at the very least me.

I've only been aware of it since October (when it was previewed in the House of Mystery Halloween special), but I've been eagerly awaiting it since then.

The real one is kinda clever with izombie.

But on the other hand, Cook.

Both covers are stunning. Usually I just glance over most of the Vertigo solicits, but I think I'm gonna give this a try.

I read that as "Who's up for some Alfred?" and mistook this for a Batman post.

I was all, "Ooh! Me! I'm up for some Alfred!" And then when I clicked I was all, "Oh, wait... Allred. That's cool too I guess."

priced at just $1.00!

Is this the good news? I don't really see anything else that would qualify it as "best" . . .

You know, I said that I didn't want a sympathetic Zombie a while back since it ruins them as mindless mooks.

But on the other hand: This seems to rock. I will definitely make an effort to maybe check it out.

BTW, I don't know for artists, but I prefer the one on the right.

Zombies are starting to become stale as hell these days, so something fresh could help it honestly.

Hell we actually had a sympathetic zombie a long while back in the original Day of the Dead.

I dunno, I think Left 4 dead has done wonders for the zombie genre.

Left 4 dead 2 (which I rented recently) is one of the best games I've played for the 360 (then again Valve always does outstanding work; I recently started playing Half Life 2 and I'm up to Ravenholme. IMHO that is the kind of game Resident Evil was trying to be; Valve GETS zombie apocalypses. And FPS's).

Ravenholme creeped me the hell out the first time I played it. The sound alone...

The original Silent Hill was the same thing. All that creepy ambient noise.

I'd probably find Ravenholme scarier if I wasn't playing it right after I got the Gravity Gun. When I see an army of Head crab zombies coming towards me, I can't help but think "Oh Goody, lets see how many I can get with this saw blade I found."

Course, the hunter crab heads are pretty horrific, the way they jump around and shit, and the poisonous crabs are a pain in the ass.

Of course, I also run out of ammo pretty quickly, so I usually just end up bashing the fuck out of the zombies with my trusty crowbar (Because I am Gordon Got damn Freeman bitch!)

I never could get the timing on that thing down, so I had a Gordon Freeman (not Frohman) who was sudden death with any weapon, but a feeble klutz with a crowbar. All the headcrabs would laugh at me.

I'm the opposite really.

I have terrible aim with firearms and I tend to waste ammo like water, so most of the time I go "Fuck it" and just rush the armed soldiers and zombies with my crowbar.

Its pretty fucking metal, if I do say so myself.

This sounds incredibly awesome (and awesomely incredible), but if I bought it I'd never get to read it. I'd just sit there and stare and the pretty, pretty Cooke cover and never get any further.

Zombies bother me terribly, and even synopses of zombie movies are enough to give me nervous attacks for months. But strangely, games don't bother me and neither do most comics (I can read Dead Winter without getting squicked). But I don't really go out of my way to look for 'em.

I have maintained and will continue to maintain that there are already too damn many zombies. Still, this sounds like an interesting twist on the concept, and if you've GOT to feature the brain-eating type, this is as good a reason as any to do it. (Plus, just ONE zombie is refreshing, considering that we usually get hordes of the critters.)

I think the Cooke cover is designed better, it's easier to read and informative. But whatever, I'll get either one.
