darkblade: (Molly vs Punisher)
[personal profile] darkblade posting in [community profile] scans_daily
Well last time I promised we’d get a look at the Young Avengers/Runaways Civil War mini and so shall I deliver but first let us see how the Runaways had an effect on Tony’s formation of the act itself.

Also there was one other mention of the two teams this post concerns that I forgot about until I went to dig out the Illuminati one shot to scan. From the “Daily Bugle” pamphlet that basically was a series of ads for different Civil War tie-ins.

I’m trying to figure out whom that blonde kid is supposed to be dressed as but I really don’t know. I thought Chase for a while but the Runaways aren’t exactly high profile enough for a kid in New York to really care about him that much and he didn’t have the fistigons of goggles at the time this was printed.

So on with the main attraction. I’m not sure how this fits in with the Runaway’s main series. It either takes place during or after the Live Fast arc.

So we open with the Runaways...

...shopping for produce. You can just feel the POWERHOUSE EXCITEMENT!

Though I like the banter between the SHIELD agents, all too often they are just treated as basic storm troopers but this book gives them actual depth and personality. Well not much depth but some personality at least.

Naturally they end up fighting a supervillain and the SHIELD Agents apologize but call in the backup.

So naturally they do what they do best, they runaway. The SHIELD Agents pursue.

Victor is severely damaged. Before this I was proud that Runaways never resorted to destroying Victor to show how bad shit is. Like the Avengers used to do moderately often with Vision and the Justice League always has done with Red Tornado. Oh well.

Meanwhile the Young Avengers are on monitor duty and see footage of the Runaways being attacked. Vision gets some system feedback from seeing Victor being damaged.

What does Cap have to say about this?

Yeah no surprise there really. Cap after all was the one who helped them after they indirectly killed their parents only for them to runaway again and then later fought them when they helped clear Cloak’s name from the imposter that was obsessed with Dagger. So it makes a certain amount of sense that he wouldn’t trust them now but then again he also doesn’t like the Young Avengers hero-ing and he does trust the Punisher later on in this event so...yeah you get to pick your bullshit.

The Runaways are busy trying to help Victor but since none of them are super geniuses there is little they can do.

I have a mixed reaction to this page. I like the subtle effect of Xavin changing gender when (s)he is off panel to comfort Karolina but what does Chase think he is going to do? No really what does he think he can do for Victor? He was a dumb jock when he was still in school and yeah Chase’s reaction here does not make a lick of sense.

So on to something awesome. Molly runs outside and sees the Young Avengers have found them. Not being up to date on the roster she naturally assumes they are from Stark’s Avengers and proceeds to be awesome.

Oh also Vision approaches Victor and they both go into some sort of meltdown but I used my last two pages on Molly being awesome which is a much more worthy cause.

We open the second issue with Maria Hill talking to some deformed mad scientist who runs the Cube talking about sending a brainwashed Nor-Var after the Runaways. But who cares about that crap? More Runaway on Young Avenger action! Molly fell asleep after throwing around Speed a bit so the Young Avengers come into the Hostel carrying an unconscious Molly. Naturally this leads to fighting.

Disassembled? That’d have been funny two events ago Nico. Try to keep up darling.

This fight takes up a lot of space so just some highlights.

So anyways Patriot convinces Nico to stop the fighting.

It doesn’t go as planned. Frankly I hate the portrayal of her magic in this book. It gets worse later but even here it always was more that the staff did what she wanted she just needed to think of different words to get the effect. In this mini the staff is painfully literal and Nico has a lot worse memory about what spells she has used than in any other Runaways story.

Also Xavin is being a stupid and a dick there. He could totally make a bonfire and warm up everyone or go all flame on himself to completely remove the cold from himself but nooooo.
One final complaint about this panel. Why is Vision breathing?

I like Karolina and Billy’s exchange at the bottom. Xavin and Victor (who were both introduced the same year as the Young Avengers were created) have uncanny similarities to Hulkling and Vision II/Iron Lad. A shape changing alien that enters a homosexual relationship with a member of another species and someone who grows up to be a major supervillain and has powers they got from Ultron based technology.

Naturally the Runaways have a hard time trusting these kids who are in line with the “adults”. Despite being such a normally well written series that aspect of the Runaways always bothered me. Especially since Cloak and Dagger got a free pass and not even pre-OMD Spider-Man did. I mean what is with that?

Xavin takes issue with Hulkling’s reluctance to fulfill his prophesy.

Only to have his neck snapped by Marvel Boy.

I think this is a good place to leave off for now. Next time I’ll wrap up this mini and the time after that I will show the Young Avengers involvement in the rest of the event.

Hm, something just occurred to me- is Old Lace male or female? I've always assumed female.

Also, Old Lace would work as a tauntan, she was still warm at the time (not that I advocate ever doing that to Old Lace!).

...the only thing that really bugged me about this was how wrong they got Billy's powers. His spell casting was always show to be a concentration thing, not a vocal/hearing thing. (The speaking helped him concentrate. I think.) There are a ton of spells that he doesn't need to speak for. I mean, it would make sense as a weakness if it didn't directly contridict the ways his powers had worked in the past. Now there are writers who make his electricity word generated...

I don't understand why people who kidnap/brainwash/blackmail superheroes to do their dirty work are always forcing/allowing them to wear their iconic costumes. Put them in fatigues, or a blur suit, or the uniform of your secret government/evil group.

I mean, I KNOW why it happens, but geez, hang a lampshade on it or something.

You know, Chase's Plastic Man imitation with his face wouldn't be nearly so distracting if he wasn't the only one doing it.

I like this dialogue, the misunderstanding between the teams, while trite in the comic book world, actually comes along as believable here. Plus the dynamic after the fight is great ("You have a potentially crazy killer robot and Skrull too!?") without any of them falling all over each other in instant camaraderie.

Just a quick question: did the whole Kate/Tommy/Eli triangle ever get resolved?

Oh god the art. It's awful. Caselli's work got much better later on in Avengers: the Initiative and Secret Warriors, but I'll always remember him as the artist who gave every other character "cock goes where?" expressions.

I was always disturbed by the scene preceding Victor getting blasted to pieces, where the Cape-Killers got all excited when they realized that they were allowed to use lethal weapons to take him down. It gives the distinct impression that if they didn't have to worry about public outrage, they'd do this to every super human.

I'll always dislike this miniseries for introducing the prophecy aspect to Hulkling. His back story was complicated enough, you don't need to make Skrulls religiously fixated on him too.

Yeeaah... this brings up a very sore point for me, namely that Xavin is absolutely right. The entirety of Secret Invasion could have been avoided if Hulkling had just gone with the Super Skrull at the end of Volume 2.
The whole (in story!) reason the crazy one got to be Skrull Queen was that they didn't have a direct, legitimate heir at the time.
But he decided that playing super hero and barely but not really appearing in any comics at all was much more important, which unfortunately makes him look like a totally clueless dickhead in retrospect.

As weak as this miniseries is, I liked the interaction between Tommy and Molly.

It's the details that let this one down more than anything, I think. I do enjoy a lot of the characterisation, though.

By the by, do we ever find out how the Young Avengers', you know, families react to all this? I know Teddy, Tommy and Vision don't have any, but the rest do. I know we get some references in the Marvel Presents issues, but I haven't seen anything about what they do during the event itself.

A few things here.

I’m not sure how this fits in with the Runaway’s main series. It either takes place during or after the Live Fast arc.

Neither. A few comments by Victor in "Live Fast" about how he's still recovering from their last adventure put this before that arc, just after Chase meets the Gibborium for the first time.

...always was more that the staff did what she wanted she just needed to think of different words to get the effect. In this mini the staff is painfully literal and Nico has a lot worse memory about what spells she has used than in any other Runaways story.

I think I remember Nico explaining once that she doesn't have much control over what happens; she focuses on something that upsets her, says what she wants to happen, and something that is sometimes only tangentially related pops out. The thing that bothered me more was when Nico used a bunch of spells she had already used and nothing happened, when it was earlier established that something random happens when she does that.

Oh yeah, and this is the comic that bumped up Molly's age to twelve; she was canonaly eleven before, then this came along and now it's all confused.

I really didn't like this mini - I mean, look at where the Runners are shacked up! Where the hell is that? Because it sure ain't the Hostel.

And everything in this mini is just so very - trite. The two teams meet, have a fight, then come together to fight the real enemy and leave with a respect for each other - just like every other team-up book in the history of forever.

I'll give Wells this, though - he's one of the writers who seemed to remember that the Runaways do NOT actually go by that name.

I thought that it was interesting when they came to arrest the Runaways, they dictated their response in accordance to what the public's reaction to seeing them attack them would be.

Nonlethal force for Molly, Nico and Chase.

Slightly more excessive for Xavin and the blonde girl whatshername because they're aliens and people only care if they die if they look hot and human-like apparently.

Victor though they can outright destroy as he's a robot and by SHIELD's standards isn't even alive.

I have this TPB and I must admit, as much as I love YA, this was meh. The art made everyone look in their 30s, the fact that only the GLBT members of both teams were kidnapped and tortured leads to some unfortunate implications and BILLY'S POWERS DON'T WORK THAT WAY.
