[personal profile] sir_mikael posting in [community profile] scans_daily
Hey everyone! Since Scans_Daily and NoScans_Daily has been up for a year now, [personal profile] salad_barbarian and I thought we’d take a little look at the good stuff and bad stuff that has happened in comics during that time. In order to do that, we figured we’d have a little award show, since that time is upon us and all. Enter THE DAILIES AWARDS! It will be posted or broadcast, so to speak, both on Scans_Daily and NoScans_Daily.

Now what we need from you gentle readers, are suggestions for categories we can use. Think about it and feel free to suggest something you feel is particularly of interest to these communities, or just something that needs to be acknowledged. The idea is to celebrate the best and worst in comics and to showcase them to those who might not have been aware of it. We have come up with the following:

Worst Comic of The Year
Biggest Non-Event
Greatest Drop in Quality
Biggest Destruction of Character
Worst Retcon
Biggest Failure to do Research
Biggest Outright Lie by The Publishers/Biggest Fan Baiting
Plot Hole of the Year
Most Unrealistic Dialouge
Biggest Fridging

But it's not all negative:

Most Improved Artist/Writer
Most Inspiring Moment
Made The Best of a Bad Situation
Most Unsubtle Subtext
Best Writer/Artist.
Best Use of Continuity
Hell Yeah-Moment of The Year
Most Original Idea
Most Promising New Creator
Most Life Affirming Title (as opposed to GrimmDark)
Best Likeness to Actor

If anyone wants to help out by making some art for this event contact [personal profile] salad_barbarian or [personal profile] sir_mikael Just remember this is for both scans and noscans so it would have to be within the rules of both communities.
On Wednesday at 6:00 PM Greenwich Mean Time* we will post the chosen categories and open the contest for nominations.

For Legality here’s a little Marvel Adventures for you.

There should be something to address Memetic Mutations; basically, stuff where fans take an unintentionally humorous comic book moments and run with it. You know like "My god, bees", or "JUSTICE!" or the "I am an Avenger" meme.

That said, I'm touched worried about this coming off as a bit too mean-spirited.

Ultimatum was probably the worst comic, while Captain America's shield about to hit Norman is a pretty good Hell Yeah moment. For fridging I would go with eith Liam or Firestorm's girlfriend.

The problem is that I don't have the greatest long term memory, and I know I'm totally forgetting the first half of 2009 whihc I'm sure had plenty of good and bad moments.

Clone War Commander (artist who most makes all their characters look the same, intentially or otherwise)

Most Unitentially Funny Moment or Comic

Best Comic of the Year You Never Heard Of

Likely Future Cult Classic

Best Obscure Character Reference

A few I came up with. I purposesly tried to come up with more positive ones because I tend to sound negative more often.

Isn't Most Unsubtle an ass backwards way of saying "least subtle"?

When I came up with it I was thinking of "It's only subtext if it's subtle." I was trying to play off of that.

I have to agree, we should tone down the negative categories considerably, or at the very least formulate them clearly tongue in cheek, most of the examples up there could easily be percieved as wank-baiting and reeking of entitlement. Considering that we don't have the greatest reputation in the comics blogosphere as it is, I don't think we want to be giving that impression.

That being said, in the spirit of the community we should give out awards for Most LGBT-Friendly (writer/comic/story), Most Diverse Cast, Best Portrayal Of Women In Comics and the like.
If we're handing out Best Writer/Character awards, it might be interesting to set aside a category for those who will get a ton of nominations anyway, to give lesser knowns a chance. Sort of like The Patron Saints of Scans_Daily.

You're right we should make it more obvious that the "worst ofs" are meant to be funny. Do you have any suggestions toward that?

Your idea for Patron Saint is great!

Oh gosh, The Liefeldfeet Award for Awkward Anatomy? The Golden Boob Window for Gratuitous Cleavage Shots? The Extra Tight Robin Panties for Unsubtle Homoeroticism?
I'm fairly certain everyone realizes the mottos and various in-jokes are facetious in nature, so maybe a Nothing Works That Way Award for Most Incomprehensible Artwork? Stuff like that.

I think it's a given that pretty much everyone here loves Gail Simone, Blue Beetle and the other Usual Suspects, so it'd probably be easier to just give them a Patron Saints award instead of sifting through their 2000+ individual nominations at the risk of overlooking deserving, but lesser known talents.

[The negative categories] ...up there could easily be percieved as wank-baiting and reeking of entitlement.

That's pretty much how they sound to me, yeah. Even if they are somehow transformed into clear jokes, I find the idea of there being as many negative categories as positive ones to be, frankly, kind of disgusting.

10% negative is about as much as I think I could stomach. I love comics. I read s_d to find stuff people love and share in that love. When this comm (or any group of fans) ends up piling on to bash stuff, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes me want to leave.

I wish s_d in general would focus on the positive, and I really don't feel like it does that job very well. (It used to, in the LJ days.) When it comes to awards, I feel even more strongly about it. Can't we choose to celebrate instead of denigrate?

I like your name for it. I was trying to come up with one like "Promise Best Fulfilled" for something that was promised actually coming true, or something that was blindly obvious actually happening.

An example would be Nekron being behind BL, and this was guessed long long ago, whereas Armageddon had Monarch suddenly be Hawk to change it from what fans figured out.

Thought of another one, how about Best Title Resurrection. An example would be the wildly popular (at least here) Secret Six. The opposite would be Shadowpact, which I liked but it just kinda lost steam.

Just thought of a category, but I am not sure how to name it:

Best serious comic? Comics that have a serious undertone or are biographical or something like this (Persepolis comes to mind, or Guy Delisle's Burma Chronicles).

Also, considering what has been going on lately and how this site was founded:

Best representation of an alternative lifestyle?

Best obscure comic people need to read? Just thinking it may make a good category mostly because and because of Scans daily I was able to check out some really good comics that I never thought of picking up.

From: [personal profile] psychopathicus_rex
OK, for negative, I would do:

'Worst Kept Secret of the Year' - i.e, a theoretically staggering plot twist that everyone and their grandma saw coming a mile away ('What?! You mean... Batman ISN'T really dead? GASP!').

And for positive, its opposite:

'Best Unpredicted Plot Twist of the Year'. This is the former played straight, something that no one DID see coming, which caused more than a few jaws to drop. (Obviously, this also has to work well in terms of the story; if it's a plot twist that no one predicted but which causes howls of outrage and derision, it doesn't qualify.)

I wonder which one Angel is Twilight would be. On the one hand they revealed it way before the comic came out so it could be the first. But on the other hand I don't think many saw it coming before they gave it away.

Of course I haven't paid attention to publishing dates so it may be ineligible.

From: [personal profile] psychopathicus_rex
I have no idea which plot twist you're talking about, so I couldn't say, but basically, I meant something that's a closely guarded secret right up until it actually comes out. If everybody predicts it anyway, it's in the former category, if nobody does, it's the latter.

Basically the twist was the bad guy turned out to be one of the good guys from earlier in the series. But it doesn't matter since it doesn't qualify as a reveal under those terms.
