Given that they don't even address how completely awful the Rawhide Kid's portrayal was in the last mini, and that the "new direction" Zimmerman mentions only seems to deal with the cast, I'm just going to say that you have a lot more faith than I do that the writer has learned from his mistakes or even gives a damn. Given that Marvel brought him back to do a sequel, I'm pretty confident that they don't.

But even if the interview had been nothing but a thousand words of Zimmerman apologizing for how he did wrong in the last go 'round, that cover above would pretty much negate any indication that they're trying to market the Rawhide Kid as anything but The Gay One.

Wasn't there an entry in the Marvel Handbook or something since the first mini, which suggested that he never had been gay?

From: [personal profile] northstarfan
Yeah, something along the lines of his flamboyant personality being a cover or some BS excuse. Whether that was trying to kick sand over Zimmerman's characterization or retcon away the gay was unclear. Either way, makes no damn sense to have the same writer back.

Unless they're admitting they were wrong to try and undo the re-retcon.

I'd give them credit for that much if they weren't going back to the same guy whose portrayal of the First! Gay! Western! Superhero! as a flaming stereotype -- the same writer who claimed that such a portrayal was "empowering" -- was so problematic that they felt the need to try and bury/undo it in the first place. As it is, it just comes off like they haven't actually learned anything and are hoping that no one was paying attention last time.

I liked the first mini. It was parodic of several Westen stereotypes, and the Kid definitely was the hero of the story. Was he flamboyant? Sure he was. So's Adam Lambert. So's Elton John. It's not as if the character trait doesn't exist. It does. If EVERY gay character were written that way I'd find it irritating, but that's not the case. I'm fairly pleased to have a gay male Western hero as it is. Maybe someday he'll be as high-profile and well-utilized as Northstar or Obsidian.

Of course the character trait exists, but, whether you go by the Ostrander retcon series or by the earlier, supposedly dime novel tales, it wasn't a part of the Rawhide Kid's make-up until Marvel decided he should be homosexual, and thus my issue with the take. It's not a matter of whether or not flamboyant, fabulous gay men exist, but the mindset that if a character is gay he must be part of the flamboyant, innuendo-laden stereotype.

I've only read some of the early stories, and the Kid seemed awfully young in them. The character in the miniseries was portrayed as somewhat older, perhaps having come to terms with changes that might have occurred. It wasn't particularly jarring. It happens in real life. Heck, "Greek" just did the same thing.

Guy who was dating Calvin gradually warmed up to the idea of being out on campus and in the fraternity and turned FABULOUS overnight, so much so that Calvin broke things off with him (which, if Calvin had seen the guy in the semi-porn 'Dante's Cove' he never would have done!). I could buy that the shy Rawhide Kid from the early stories might have changed to the one we saw in the mini in much the same way.

Is that sarcasm or sincerity? Given the industry, I honestly can't tell.

I can't imagine that it did, or why wait seven years for a sequel?

My suspicion is that this is Marvel's attempt to cash in on any western nostalgia that the upcoming Jonah Hex movie might kick up.

"Hey, we've got a cowboy property, right? And look, the movie guy is even available to write it again! Perfect! We'll have the trade out in time for the movie release!"

Ugh.

So wait, they're taking a mini that was almost universally reviled from 2003, making a sequel, and getting the same guy to write it?

Are they not thinking at Marvel these days, or does Zimmerman have incriminating pictures or something?

So, who is this for? Western fans won't like it for retconning the Rawhide Kid into a flaming homosexual, and gay people won't like it because the Rawhide Kid is being treated as an excuse for an army of gay jokes. If they were trying to make a comic that appeals to absolutely no one, then Jeph Loeb has beaten them to it, like, ten times already.

I feel bad that Marvel thinks being gay is a joke.
DC seems far more prgrressive than marvel with their portrayal of gay characters.

You think this is bad. Mark Millar went on and on about how it was "Amazing Fun" to write a gay version of Johnny Storm from an alternate U for his Fantastic Four run. The character then got a page and a half, with no dialogue, before being brutally executed.

"The goal was to see if I could create what would be the very first Marvel hero team. "

He failed. In Avengers 142, which is where I suspect he got the idea in the first place, there's a team consisting of The Rawhide Kid, Kid Colt, Two Gun Kid, Night Rider, and The Ringo Kid. This takes place in 1873, when Billy The Kid was only 14 and not yet Billy The Kid.

I wish I had picked up Avengers 143 at the time, so I would know how the story ended.
