If you have never seen an episode of "Sex and the City" it's all about cliched "girl talk" -- shoes, cupcakes, sex and men. Men, men, men. At times it's like it just doesn't adhere to Bechdel's Rule, it's like it mugs it and leaves it bleeding by the side of the road.
The movie sequel opens today and I'm being forced to see it tonight as part of a birthday celebration for two of my friends*. I don't read much Marvel, but I love the Alias series and I have never posted anything from it. So here's Jessica Jones and Carol Danvers dishing the dirt in 4 pages of Alias #6.
*Who really do have good taste except for this and at least we are drinking, heavily in my case, first.

title: Alias, creator: Brian Michael Bendis, char: char: jewel/jessica jones, char: char: ms. marvel/carol danvers, creator: michael gaydos.

You know, I can usually stand the "girl talk" of shows like Sex in the City. Until now, I never realized that it was due to actual facial expressions and character reactions. That has got to be the most boring conversation EVER. And the lack of actual facial expressions didn't help one iota.

Bendis is a great writer, I love almost all the stuff of his that I've read, he's just fun to tease.

Well, it's not that I find it bad writing, but for this kind of gossip talk, I think I need a level of dynamic movement that comes best from moving pictures, be they real people or animated. More exaggerated facial expressions would have interested me more too. Seeing these scenes made me notice this a lot more, which makes sense in hindsight since I generally find written gossip boring.

The lack of facial expressions (and the constant lazy repeating images) is one reason why I can never really dig Bendis stuff like ALIAS and his DAREDEVIL. Unless he's working with an artist gifted with facial expressions and body language, Bendis' comic scripts would be much better served as plays or film scripts.

Would he direct? I can imagine his stage directions--possibly with hissy fits when actors don't return to the same exact position repeatedly.

Hmm. I love Maleev's art like burning, but yeah, his facial expressions can be hard to make out sometimes. Still, I wouldn't say they're non-existent. Jessica has some great ones in this series and ditto for Matt in the Daredevil run.

They're just a) sort of subtle to begin and b) annoyingly obscure by thick shadows sometimes.

Yeah. :(

Yeah, that was some wonky wording on my part. I meant that I needed either more extreme expressions or actual moving faces/bodies. The subtle expressions and sunglasses are just too static for me.

I'm willing to give it a pass, kinda. I mean, the scene is totally going for a Sex in the City vibe, so in that sense, they nailed it. To that end, Sex in the City isn't the best example of 'what women talk about when together'.

Well considering She-Hulk's reputation when it comes to men, it's only a matter of time until she runs across one of the manwhores which include: Tony Stark, Wolverine, and yes Luke Cage. If she was a DC Character, Roy Harper and Oliver Queen definitely would be added to the list.

I wonder how well Michael Patrick King or another Sex and the City writer would do on a Marvel comic. Allan Heinberg wrote for SATC and created the Young Avengers.

Any other SATC writers try their hands at superhero comics? Marc Guggenheim wrote for CSI: Miami and The Practice, but not SATC.

This clearly needed four pages to fully contain its awesomeness. Jack Kirby, Alan Moore, philistines like that, they might only devote two or three pages to the concept of Luke Cage enjoying sex with superheroines. Only Brian Michael Bendis would know that the audience would not only want, but DEMAND a list of female superheroes that Luke Cage has banged.

~voiceover of Black Cat~

"You this city you sometimes realize that some of the best men....are the ones with the most baggage,,,"

~Mary Jane, Black Cat, Carol Danvers, Black Widow, Storm and Sue Storm are sitting in a cafe eating dinner~

"C'mon Sue..tell us...does EVERYTHING stretch?"

~Sue rolls her eyes and takes a bit of her salad~

" You ask that every time we get together Cat and I always say the same thing ~a bite of salad and a wicked grin~ a girl's got to have SOME secrets"

~Carol looks over at a stressed MJ~

"Girl you look like you haven't eaten in days...~

~Storm looks over from her conversation with Carol~

"She's right look awful."

~MJ lets off a slight smile~

"Thanks's just...Peter..."

~the girls all stop eating and look over at MJ, Widow rolls her eyes~

"I've been telling you Jane, that man's nothing but trouble. His bullshit makes Tony's problems with booze look like a trip to Disney World"

~Storm sends a glare to Widow who rolls her eyes~

"He's like...I lost a year. I can't put my finger on it but a year is just...gone. Fuzzy"

"Yeah..that happened to me once...had a name for it though...martinis"

"God shut up Carol."

~MJ laughs~

"Thanks girls....I bet it's nothing. Just....I miss him so much sometimes"

~Cat looks awkwardly away, camera pulls out of restaurant~

"That's the moment I knew....this City and I had two things in common....we both had secrets that needed to be kept~

This conversation has always bothered me because of the reason Luke Cage brings up when she "confronts" him about the "cape chasing" later. Why would it bother her that a superhero tends to sleep mostly with other superheroes? It's not like Luke friggin' Cage is some mouth-breathing fanboy.
