LGBTQ Roll Call

With June being LGBTQ Pride, I couldn't think of a better time to do a Roll Call celebrating exceptional LGBTQ characters in comics.

While there have been a number of LGBTQ characters, most of them at best have been relegated to minor characters and at worst deplorable homophobic queer minstrel shows.
And don't get it conflated.

Visibility is not progress.

If it were then the Rawhide Kid and Northstar would be progressive trailblazing characters.

So no, this isn't just my list of queer comic characters.

This is a salute to the elite characters who have provided me with a more than a few OH HELL YEAH! moments.
A list of characters and made me proud to be a comic book geek and an LGBTQ.

Also, if you haven't already, feel free to check out my recent post on No_Scans discussing Queer Tropes to better understand where I'm coming from on this.

That being said: ROLL CALL!!!!!!!

Not sure if the live-action movie version featured 616 Colossus or Ultimate Colossus.

It really doesn't matter because you're a fool if you think I"m about to pass up a chance to partake in some Grade-A beefcake like one Daniel Cudmore.

Willow Rosenberg

Now, I'm willing to bet there are some gems out there that myself and others may not be aware of and/or should (re)consider checking out.

So if you have any recommendations of awesome exceptional prominent LGBTQ characters in comics then by all means, sharing is caring. Please post them away in the comments.

Like icon_uk I remember reading Nothstar's early appearances. The first times we saw Northstar he was

1) in the closet about his sexuality,

2) in the closet about his mutant status,

3) barely able to function on a team,

4) unable to hold a civil conversation with his sister,

5) unable to handle a steady relationship,

6) unable to teach and mentor others, and

7) basically an arrogant shithead.

Now he's

1) publicly out about his sexuality,

2) publicly out about his mutant status,

3) a valued and courted team player,

4) comfortable with Jeanne-Marie,

5) in a stable and steady relationship,

6) teaching and mentoring others in a positive manner,

7) yeah still an arrogant shithead.

Six out of seven ain't bad.

1) Coming out is now cliche? Should I tell that to the closeted gays and lesbians in my local high school?

2) What time period are you talking about? There were quite a few out mutants in the late 80s. There's more now, of course.

3) That's not what Cyclops said, or what Logan said. And I wouldn't say he abandoned them so much as he saw the fight was over and moved on.

4) Me, funnily enough. I'm especially impressed that they are able to do it when they only met as adults and both of them were walking basket cases, Aurora more so than Northstar. I know far too many people who can't sustain caring relationships with their own adult siblings under normal circumstances, let alone such extra-ordinary ones.

5) The ability to sustain a long-term relationship tends to impress those of us who know how much work it takes to do so.

I'm at a loss here. One moment you're complaining about the way he deals with the people around him and the next you're fussing about me making this "all about relationships".

Yeah, life kind of is all about relationships. When he was first introduced Northstar couldn't sustain ANY kind of relationship, on the personal level, on the team level, or an honest relationship with the public. Now he can. How is this not progress?

If you want to talk about a character who's stuck, there's Johnny Storm. He's had no real development in 49 years. But Northstar has matured a good dea.

6) I've seen far too many people fail at mentoring troubled youth not to be impressed.

I don't see how being out and proud, having a loving relationship with Kyle, or mentoring Anole is a sign of being "an avatar of straight privilege". He's been written badly in the past, but if we take every character who's ever been written badly off the list you wouldn't have anyone left up there.

I don't like Northstar, although I find his recent progress to be a step in the right direction. That doesn't change his official status as the first out gay superhero.
