With June being LGBTQ Pride, I couldn't think of a better time to do a Roll Call celebrating exceptional LGBTQ characters in comics.

While there have been a number of LGBTQ characters, most of them at best have been relegated to minor characters and at worst deplorable homophobic queer minstrel shows.
And don't get it conflated.

Visibility is not progress.

If it were then the Rawhide Kid and Northstar would be progressive trailblazing characters.

So no, this isn't just my list of queer comic characters.

This is a salute to the elite characters who have provided me with a more than a few OH HELL YEAH! moments.
A list of characters and made me proud to be a comic book geek and an LGBTQ.

Also, if you haven't already, feel free to check out my recent post on No_Scans discussing Queer Tropes to better understand where I'm coming from on this.

That being said: ROLL CALL!!!!!!!

(Ultimate) Colossus

Not sure if the live-action movie version featured 616 Colossus or Ultimate Colossus.

It really doesn't matter because you're a fool if you think I"m about to pass up a chance to partake in some Grade-A beefcake like one Daniel Cudmore.

Willow Rosenberg

Tara MaClay

John Constantine

The Midnighter

Apollo & The Midnighter

Now, I'm willing to bet there are some gems out there that myself and others may not be aware of and/or should (re)consider checking out.

So if you have any recommendations of awesome exceptional prominent LGBTQ characters in comics then by all means, sharing is caring. Please post them away in the comments.

Willow might also be debatable, since yes, she came out as a lesbian, but fell into the "My girlfriend of minimal actual personality beyond being my girlfirend has been killed, I will go insane and destroy the universe because I'm that unstable" trope.... if that actually qualifies as a trope.

Um, gonna have to disagree about Tara being personality-less. Just because she was shy doesn't mean she didn't have a personality. There was a whole episode about that (Family) that actually explored the fact that Buffy's friends didn't know much about her outside of her being Willow's girlfriend. A lot of Tara's story was about her coming out of her shell and becoming a stronger person, which was explored with her growing friendship with Buffy.

The episode about her family focussed on a lie her father had told her to keep her in her place, not on Tara's personality itself.

At the end of it we knew she was strong enough to stand up to her family, but we still knew almost nothing about HER, her likes and dislikes, the sort of thing one might hope to learn about a recurring character. Buffy and friends had a point, they didn't know much about her, but they didn't find anything much more about her wither, beyond her family being ghastly people.

I think the only other thing I could say we found out was that she was allergic to shrimp.

Granted, her relationships tended to be about other people, but that's just because she was a supportive person. She was a mother to Dawn when she needed one, a friend to Buffy when her other friends didn't know how to handle her, and a lover to Willow when she was alone. Tara was there for others and put their needs in front of her own. (Most of the time.) Even after her breakup with Willow, she still stayed involved with Dawn and Buffy because they needed her.

For more practical, character oriented detail? In the sixth season, we learned her ice cream preferences and that she liked art history. We also know that she has been out of the closet longer than Willow.

We also learned that she liked to ride horses back home. Forgot that one.

When Willow wiped her memory, she got pissed, and she set down boundaries, and when Williow violated them, she walked. I thought that was awesome.

Also, I have met Amber Benson and she is love. <3

Same! I met her at a comic con and the first thought I had was, "Wow, she's really thin in real life."

I have a picture of it somewhere...

Agreed! Tara definitely had a personality and I hate when people say she didn't.

Eh. Personally, while I have some issues with how Willow's sexuality was portrayed, I've always considered her a good example of visibility despite that storyline. Can't speak for anyone else, though.
