Part 1

Last time, I promised bat-fornication, and bat-fornication you shall have!*

But first... EXPOSITION.

So the Demon's Head was the World's Greatest Detective's first suspect in the murder of a Gotham scientist. So what most these two bitter archenemies do when confronting one another? DINE, of course! (they are gentlemen of wealth, remember?)

Image Hosted by

Yeah, Bruce, you're not the only one with murdered loved ones. Psssh, jerk.

Anyways, time for a groovy flashback... *doodle-ooh, doodle-ooh, doodle-ooh*

Image Hosted by

(lettering note, that date really looks like 1994, so I'd be thinking, "what happened in August '94? They get sick camping out for Asiad tickets?")

Image Hosted by

Seems kinda old looking for "just a child." Also, Melisande? Last time I heard that was in Flight of Dragons.

Image Hosted by

Yeeeeeaaaah, this sudden and complete alliance seems kinda forced. You'd think Bruce was just playing along for the sake of getting deeper into the League of Assassins, but his trust is played completely straight.

Image Hosted by

Ooooh, yeah... here it comes...

So, the Batman is made Ra's al Ghul's second, and he sets about trying to train the men in non-lethal maneuvers. Bruce, they're the League of Assassins.

In the scans I had to cut out, Qayin, now a brutish giant of a man, has set up shop in a small, Mediterranean country called Golatia. A general named Yossid has come to see him about the incident in America and to discuss a rocket launch they have a vested interest in. Afterward, a doctor gives Qayin some test results that indicate he will die in a matter of weeks. Qayin believes that is enough time "to either save myself or take the world with me." Ruh-roh.

A Bat/al Ghul strike force sneaks onto an American base the Golatian military has helped build and oversee, trying to interfere with Qayin's plans to interfere. Batman and Qayin briefly fight while Talia Bruce Lee's her way to freedom. The bomb they tried to to plant as a last resort measure should Qayin gain control of the rocket's weather-controlling satellite (aah, comics) is cut off just before lift-off. And Batman is pissed off Qayin wasn't killed in the ignition blast(?).

The group returns to the mountain base.

Image Hosted by

Haha, "One Punch" Bruce, they call 'im. Ha ha- wait.

Qayin tortures a captured operative and finds out the location of al Ghul's base.

Image Hosted by

Yeah, tempt fate, Bruce; that's a good idea.

Image Hosted by

"No, no, no! I won't have my woman defending herself! That's obscene! Get back in the kitchen!"

Talia then saves his ass by shooting a guy inna nurtz. Batman wants to escape with Talia while Ra's just wants to protect his empire. Qayin makes it far enough to reach the newly finished Lazarus Pit, only for Ra's to pull a "Big Brother" announcement and detonate the room.

While Qayin's men flee, he rises from the rubble and legs it back to his home country (somehow). After the successful activation of the satellite, Qayin's men overtake its controls and he orders a hurricane sent into Soviet territory (this was written during the Cold War). Yossid argues the point and Qayin opens the fool's ribcage with his bare hands.

Bats and Ra's are centering in on Qayin's base in Golatia when Talia pulls a dramatic faint.

Image Hosted by

Oops. Maybe you shouldn't have shoved her so hard, Bruce.

Ra's and his boys mount up to take the fight to Qayin. Angry Poppa Bear Batman hops aboard, despite his earlier remarks about splitting. Apparently, ugly, personal revenge is A-OK with the Dark Knight, so long as it's for dead babies.

Image Hosted by

Paratrooper Bat-attack! Never gets old. But apparently Batman's "No Guns, No Killing" rules do.

Batman tries to confront Qayin, but he just pushes him aside like he's a JV linebacker. Batman goes, "oh no you di'n't!" and full body tackles him. Then he just starts meat grinding Qayin's face with his fists.

Ra's pulls some wires and destroys the satellite (???) ending the crisis. Qayin tries to electrocute al Ghul but gets a face full of Batboot and death by amps for his troubles. (It was an accident, so no juicy revenge killing for Bruce)

Image Hosted by

Batman returns to Gotham and finally reveals why Dr. Blaine died. Dr. Pearson, Blaine's partner, wanted money, so he sold the company out to Qayin. ALGOL was Dr. Blaine's way of saying, "the programmer did it." Way to run all the variables, Batman.

And that's Damian Wayne's "first" appearance!

Why did Talia give him up for adoption? Well, it's kinda obvious he wouldn't be the "happiest child ever."

Fortunately Regrettably, the SBP time-punch that "covered everybody's ass" according to Morrison, allowed the retcon of Damian being born outside Talia's womb as a fricking test tube baby.

Yeesh. I'm glad they didn't end up naming him Thomas.

You've got Batman giving Talia her necklace twice.

And damn she's hot with that semi-auto rifle. Hmmmmmmm.

Aaron "The Mad Whitaker" Bourque; what?

It's irritating that Batman: The Brave And The Bold is embracing the Silver Age so whole-heartedly. Considering how Bruce now has more gadgetry than James Bond, a cool espionage episode with Talia would be AWESOME.

I wouldn't say it's out of line. B:BatB seems to follow a hiarcy as to what they let into the show. Goofy>Awesome>Dramatic>Logical>Canon

Your idea fits squarely into awesome so it could work.

I can see why this is retconned. That "Beloved, I am pregnant?" "That's wonderful!" "Isn't it?" scene reminds me of that Nightwing fake world where Bruce wants to talk about his feelings.

Agreed. I think Ra's and Talia are the only people in Bruce's world who are more serious than he is. Totally sense-of-humor deficient, and prone to be badly written because of it.

Well, at least they don't get into the whole Thee/Thou/Thine muddle, so that bad writers can make even worse mistakes...

Hmm. The Talia/Bat sex scene in Morrison's run was hotter (In terms of artwork, not the whole drugged-up Bruce scenario). Bruce fully naked except for his cowl? Sexy, practical, also hilarious.

It surprises me that the baby ends up dumped on a doorstep. This is Talia Al Ghul, not a prom queen in denial. I'm sure she has the resources to make sure her baby is given up for adoption in an anonymous and safe way.

I'm kind of disappointed the writers didn't take the subtle tacky route and have Talia's necklace be made of pearls...

Pretty nice art for that time. (tho dang is that some pale coloring...) but waah, I liked what Talia did in the end here, better than what Morrison has turned her into. T-T

I really like this book for the art. Batman standing over the city in the rain-and unmasked- on the last page is a really nice image.
