More of Harvey's Black Cat series, by Lee Elias, this time from issue #24, August 1950.

This is an ad that ran in some of the earlier issues of the series:

Apparently, these were the additional features that were requested by the readers.

The paper doll doesn't surprise me at all, but I wonder who the tough little girl was that wanted judo lessons?

I don't know, but she's my new favorite person.

What makes you think it was a little girl?

Being rude is not an answer.

Well it could have been a boy or a girl, or even just the adult creator/editor wanted to put that feature in there. And there's a different flavor of cool about a little boy in the fifties who's a fan of a superheroine book that has paper dolls.

And that little girl grew up to be... Fred Hembeck.

(no, not really)

Sure you know. She was Dinah Lance. :)

I've always wanted to see Black Canary doing less of the high kicks (fun as they are to draw) and more of the "I know every bone and joint in your body and I know how to make them all hurt each other, using an aggregate total of three pounds of pressure."

This is so many different kinds of wonderful.

I also like the juxtaposition of the judo lessons and the paper doll: it says "girls, you can be a capable non-nonsense tough-as-nails fighter who can defend herself and also be glamorous." None of this "if you're strong and athletic and stand up for yourself, there's something wrong with you" crap.

But lord, what happened to the world between 1950 and 1963? How did the world slide so far backwards that fifty-nine years on, women and men alike still haven't dug our way out of that pit of misogyny and neurosis?

I suspect it's an ongoing tug-of-war between different forces in human nature, and it'll never be settled. There will always be a fight between repression and liberation. People who aren't in charge want to get in charge and people in charge want to stay there. People who don't enjoy something want to make sure no one else gets to enjoy it either.

Most likely, it will never go away. As long as there are people will be saying, "You have to act this way!" and others will be replying, "I'll do what's right for me." It's been going on since the beginning.

Okay, I recognize Edgar Bergen and Charlie, Jack Benny and Clark Gable. But who are the couple Rick is talking to on page 2, panel 4? The art is fine, but the caricatures aren't up to Mort Drucker standards.

Although I'm not exactly disappointed, I was expecting more deviantart.

There was a bit of bondage and torture and stuff just before the comic turned into a horror title. But Linda was fairly well adjusted for a movie star who fights crime in a costume whenever she can.
