I've already used the X-Men's "Asgardian War" storyarc as an example of best friendship between Warlock and Cypher. And here it is again, as a springboard for perhaps my favourite "What it...?" world.

The cover alone convinced me! :D

At the end of the Asgardian Wars Loki gave the X-Men and New Mutants a choice, stay in Asgard and keep all that they had achieved there, all the new lives and new loves they had found, and in the case of Storm, powers returned to her, or return to Earth as they had been before they arrived; Storm would be powerless, Magma would be human instead of the elf-form the elven folk had curssed her with, and so on (The only exception he made, out of narrative necessity courtesy, was that Karma would NOT be returned to the grotesquely obese form her time under the control of the Shadow King had given her). The choice HAD to be unanimous though

Of course, in the mainstream MU, the choice to return to was made, but this IS a "What if...?"

8 pages out of 30, story and art by Jim Valentino...

The best What if's have a plausible turning point, and I like this one...

In this timeline Wolfsbane is the one who realises that she cannot leave behind Hrimrari the Wolf Prince, who she loves. The X-Men try to convince her otherwise, but it's her best friend Dani who is the first to stand defend her decision, against Wolverine's pointing out that they all have a say in such a choice.... It's a great moment for Dani...

Okay  some selfishness there to be sure, but that's human... (Doug staying is a little odd, as though he CAN read any language it's not something he tended to make a study of, but never mind)

Loki, of course, has a plan...

We see no more of that X-Men team, which is a shame. Warlock isn't there which makes me sad, perhaps without Doug he returned home.

See what a fun world this was? So many great little ideas, Kurt in his element, Doug becoming the first librarian in Asgardian history, Rogue getting a guy worthy of her (Though her being able to touch Asgardians without leeching them wasn't quite the case based on other stories, but again, we'll cope)

Things don't go well though, as with Thor still a frog on Earth, Hela leads an assault on Asgard, we're not going into much of that though, you'll need to buy the comic for that! :P

I leave this page in as someone who never much cared for the character in question...

Cypher doesn't get shot by the Ani-Mator and Sunspot meets his maker fighting Hela herself, I like this timeline.

The X-Men's involvement is pivotal, as they bring their allies to side with Asgard. Sam brings the Dwarves, Rahne brings the Wolves, Balder prevents Karnilla from killing Magik (She doesn't like the competition) and the Norns side with Asgard against Loki too. Tthe Mighty Thor (still in "Frog of Thunder" mode) returns and fights Storm, who is being influenced by Loki for his own ends... And Dani.. she brings her sister Valkyrie, who between them have the power to destroy the now power mad Hela, though the cost is that Dani must take on the mantle of the death goddess herself.

The war is won by Asgard, though there are more losses, most notably Hrimrari the wolf-prince and now a new order is established, courtesy of Thor...

And now we see how the NEW Asgard lines up

So, Loki, by lies and misdirection, brings peace to Asgard, more peace than they've ever known before. As such he gets his just reward from "Those Who Sit Above in Shadow"... they keep their promise that he is made King of all Asgard... but because of the methods he chose, he is made King of Asgard at the end of all times.. as the charred ruin of long, long dead Asgard plummets towards an all destroying black hole...

Now, tell me, wouldn't YOU want to see more stories in this timeline?

It is an awesome What If Tale... nice and Epic but without everyone dying for a change!

Would have been great to see more of This Earth's XMen cos despite what the Watcher says without those that stayed and no XForce etc things will be Very different for the XMen.

Bring back the Exiles they need to visit this universe!

Yeah I'm curious what happened with the x-men on earth snice storm, nightcrawler, and Rogue stayed in Asgard right before the most dangerous events for the mutants happened which is the Mutant Massacre(no X-factor, and cyclops x-men leadership, would the causualites be little or different), the Fall of the Mutants(Storm played a major part on the Adversary defeat, Apocalypse attack on New York), and Inferno as well.(well probably wouldn;t have happened with Magik staying in Asgard and Cyclops relationship with Madeylne and Jean coming back might have happened differently).

Also, what would have been Magneto role snice the new mutants merged with the X-men and Cyclops didnt trust him as much as Storm did as leader. then again, the Trial might happened differently. Also, anti-mutant histeria was its biggest then and the X-men sacriface against the Adversary might never happened(without Storm, Forge may have defeated the Adversary on his own). Then again, X-factor wasn't around to increase the hysteria.

Ah, that rarest of creatures: A What If..? that is neither "Pyhrric Victory" nor "Rocks Fall, Everybody Dies."

This is maybe my biggest disappointment with Exiles: It didn't revisit What If worlds enough.

Sure, if Art Adams could take the art at least part of the time. His art for the original crossover was awesome.

So it safe the say that the X-Men will only have happy lives in non-cannon universes... save for one?

Wow. Green Arrow - Rogue pairing right there!

Is it just me who can see this? Of course it's not just me.

Oh certainly, a blond guy with that facial hair. I think it's generally asked why Green Arrow's in Asgard every time he shows up on SD.

Aww - this is nice. I always thought that they could have had a pretty good time in the Golden Realm. I like that Sam got married to Eitri's daughter - they had a sweet little crush on each other in-universe. And Rahne having a litter of shapeshifters is just nifty and heartwarming at the same time.
Mind you, I've a quibble or two. As you pointed out, there's nothing in particular that I can recall which says Rogue can touch Asgardians without effect - I think she tried touching Loki once, and the shock of trying to absorb a god's powers knocked her out. Still, that can be handwaved away by magic, I suppose. Nightcrawler leaping at the chance to stay is a little out of character - he's always been committed to the team. (Of course, he didn't know at that point that most of his teammates would be returning home, but still, one would think he would side with Wolvie, Colossus and Cyclops.) And Magik was giving in to her dark side pretty seriously by the time the Mutants went home - one would think that having her as the Enchantress would NOT be particularly fun.
Still and all, though, I'll take a happy ending any time. Good stuff.

Well, I don't know much about the Massacre, but I DO know that, while they were still in Asgard, Illyana was getting increasingly arrogant and autocratic towards the other Mutants, referring to them as 'idiots', 'X-babies' and 'silly mewling brats', sneeringly referring to Cypher as 'helpless as a baby', and saying stuff like 'Don't they realize I'M the only one who matters?!' Karma makes reference to how 'the more she practices the Enchantress' spells, the more like her she becomes', and when Colossus sees her, he muses that 'there is an aura about her that... terrifies me'. Sounds like giving in to her dark side to ME.

Could be, yeah. In the previous issue, though, there was all that business of her evil half doing the Enchantress's bidding, and generally a focus on how... disturbing it was that such a capacity for evil even existed inside such an otherwise nice person like Illyana. The inference, it seemed to me, was pretty clearly that her 'Darkchylde' persona, having been yanked out of her and put back into her, was brought closer to the surface, and was coming closer and closer to taking over the more Illyana studied magic. When the memory of all those spells was wiped from her mind on the trip back, she settled down again.

How come Rahne's story here has her happy with her kids, but in the recent X-Factor story, she cough up a little monster out for blood!?!?
