Many, many Superman stories would end with Clark Kent winking at the reader. But Batman would stop mid-story to talk to the audience! Or at least he did in BATMAN #1. The art is by Bob Kane, but I don't know if the story was by Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson, Gardner Fox, or someone else.

Here's the full page, showing that Robin contributes more to Batman's "scare criminals" motif than you might think.

The rest of the story is Batman tracking down Catwoman, then called "The Cat," and letting her escape because she's pretty. Huh.

This story from BATMAN #4 ends with Bruce Wayne "pretending" to talk to the audience
about how crime just doesn't pay. (It's a Golden Age story I wouldn't mind seeing "modernized" like MONSTER MEN and MAD MONK.)

I've always said Robin would be more inherently frightening than Batman

Never mind the sort of thoughts his lithe limbed form might set racing through the minds of some of the bad guys consider this;

Batman is the big scary guy who dresses to distress and terrifies you with his presence. He is the embodiment of menace.... So just how bloody freaky must the kid he lets hang around with him be? The kid who dresses like a circus parade and smiles all the time, relishing every fight. Batman is fear inducing, Robin is just freaking DISTURBING!

That said, I like the PSA element to these.

I was thinking that too. Something about the way Robin is drawn here, too, makes him seem like a total psycho.

The PSA made me want Batman to guest star on The Wire and tell those kids not to be sucked in!

Of course, back then Batman was not quite as scary as he used to be - he enjoyed his little scraps as much as Robin did, and frequently had a grin on his face as he punched out crooks; it's just that Robin was the guy with the corny puns and the bright costume, so it was more noticeable on him.

My thoughts exactly! It`s that smile..that axe-crazy smile...and those legs and that behind..and..what were we talking about?

I imagine that Batman going easy on Catwoman just because she's hot would have dampened the message a bit.

Still, the way Bruce stares off the panel feels like he's trying to make me ashamed to be a Jason fangirl - Because he's YELLOW without his guns! Don't go around admiring him! (Or his guns).

And you better do your best to stop him too!

Maybe the Cat didn't have a gun, so she couldn't "play" with the boys. :p

Wow, looks like they edited out Bruce shooting Jimmy McCoy vigilante style. Not saying they did, really, just like it could have been.

They didn't - he'd just been in a shootout with some other crooks, and while he got them, it looks like they got him, too.

The trouble with modernizing that second one is that it's a direct swipe from several of the better-known gangster flicks of the time - the ending is straight out of 'The Roaring Twenties'. It's a good story, all right, but it's not a bit original.
An interesting twist on the usual Bat/Cat relationship - she's got the hots for him, but he resists because she is a CRIMINAL - is that, in the first few comics featuring her, it was the other way 'round. She's basically just using him, and well he knows it, but he makes allowances anyway, because gawrsh, she's purty. Eventually, she warms up to him and he starts turning her away and the more typical relationship sprouts, but it's interesting to take a look at the early stuff and see HIM have a crush on HER.

The moral is clear to me. Ugly gun-totting crooks go down, but we let the pretty ones go. The pretty should always be free to do their pretty crimes! Like Jason :D

By the by, does anyone else think Batman looks like a vampire in the panel where he addresses the audience? Like a vintage illustration of Dracula or something? XD

Yup. It's all in the cheekbones and the evil slitted eyes (and the bat ears which make him look a bit like Nosferatu).
