One page asking THE question a lot of us want answered.

"..because Stephanie needed the test. And everybody deserves a second chance."

So the honest to truth real reason. The Big Red Cheese scout's honor. Cross DC's heart and hope that no more Teen Titans die.

It's good to see her mentioned. But Cass coming back at a major player is still aways off.

I really don't mind this, it puts Cass in a better light than the way they originally had her going off in an apparent " DONT LOOK FOR ME" huff. They show Bruce has full faith in her as well.

I'm curious WHY they don't say "Cassandra Wayne" your own adopted DAUGHTER though, it's like the whole Tim Drake thing. MAKE UP YOUR MIND DC, ARE THEY FAMILY OR NOT?!

I'd say as far as retcons go, even if this is a bit of a blanket cover, it's permissible to me because it was her following Bruce's wishes and a mutual sense of trust that I've seemed to think they had or have had in the past. Cass has been SO abused by DC under the title of Batgirl, it makes a little bit of sense for her to be able to shed and grow. I can't help but feel she would feel a bit jaded after all that she's been through, and losing Bruce not long after being adopted as well. But still, her costume was hella scary.

As much as Cassandra makes a great character as Batgirl, and from a writer's point of view like a fascinating character to write, I have to admit that Stephanie as Batgirl really DOES add a light touch to the Batman family AND DC comics overall that was sorely needed. They just don't have enough "fun" books out right now, and this one regularly gives a good show.

I'm sure Cass will be back full-time in time. I wouldn't be surprised if she took up the now empty Nightwing mantle. Though with Flamebird also seeming to return with Batwoman...the Batman extended Family is getting awfully full!

One thing I've been curious about a bit more than Cass is...it was always implied she was in Hong Kong, but WHERE IS MISFIT?! While I really like the Batgirl comic as is, I had originally thought it was going to be more of a team book between Cass, Stephanie, and Misfit. Like team Batgirl or something. Now Gail Simone has nothing to do with this, but I'm shocked she hasn't even appeared in Birds of Prey yet either!

Charlie and Sin are in foster homes, according to Barbara. They keep in touch, but aren't currently part of the action. We'll see how long that lasts. Wonder if Sin likes eggplant?

Since Dick is staying Batman, Cass taking over the Nightwing job would work. And yeah, the Batman Family is growing, a "family team organization" as Bruce puts it.

I don't know, usurping Dick's title sounds tacky.

I'd like to wait and see someone give Cass her own title.

Considering all the not-quite-maybe animosity DC loves to foster between Cass and Dick it'd seem a bit like a slap in the face to me for her to take his costume just cause it's there. I'd be happier seeing her pull a Nightwing in a more spiritual sense by branching out and developing something uniquely personal instead of donning someone else's secondhand togs again.

I wondered about the name thing too. You don't see Alfred calling Tim "Timothy Drake" or Dick "Richard Grayson". All he would have to do is say Cassandra and Bruce knows who he's talking about. Not to mention the fact, Alfie, is you are so upset Bruce didn't bring up Cass why haven't YOU looked for her. It's not like Alfred and Dick and Babs haven't got access to all Bruce's files/stuff/money. But only Tim bothered? Sloppy ret-con.

Agreed. But there wouldn't have been a need for it if Steph or Babs had behaved as normal people do and name dropped Cass here and there. It HAS been over a year since Cass disappeared, just mentioning here and there (especially since other books like Red Robin and BoP have already done so) would not have hurt Stephanie as Batgirl.

It's an okay explanation, actually. At least it shows Bruce trusts her, and she hasn't gone evil or anything. I like it. I would have liked seeing Cass playing an important part on screen more, but well, can't have everything. The whole thing comes off as ever so slightly *cough* condescending towards Steph, though.

Not really, since Bruce planned this before Final Crisis, and that's how he tended to do things, back then. Remember, he'd given Steph the assignment to make Tim a better Robin. So, Cass's assignment was to make Steph ready to be Batgirl.

You could also take this as Cass agreeing to do something really nice (in typical skewed batstyle) for her best friend, which really is about the best salvaging of the situation you could ever hope for.

Date: 2010-10-14 06:31 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] darkknightjrk
Yeah--I've been thinking that was the intent almost the whole time. Cass knows that Stephanie got a bit of a bum rap, but she's Cass' friend, and like Bruce says in the end of this, everyone deserves a second chance.

If Bruce gave these orders I have to wonder how long ago and if they'd been updated. The situation the Bat-family was in around the time of Bruce's "death" doesn't strike me as the perfect time to pull the switcheroo.

They chose to ignore his instructions to knit a scale model of the Taj Mahal out of cooked sphagetti, and considered his orders to build a rocket, to fight a mummy, find something that doesn't exist and give a monkey a shower as being a side effect of watching a Phineas and Ferb Marathon just before Doctor Hurt attacked.

This is probably the best possible thing that could have happened to Cass given everything else that happened to her.

This really props her up and is one of the better retcons DC has done recently.

To be honest given how they've avoided even mentioning Cassandra's name in the past I'm surprised Alfred brang her up at all.

As I said in the previous post on this issue, I wonder if this ret-con is Miller finally responding to the criticism he got over how easily he dismissed Cass from the cowl (in 1 page!) in Batgirl #1 or if it's another Editorial mandate. Either way it's not too smooth. Still doesn't explain why Tim was the only one in the Bat-Family who seems to have given a damn about Cass or was concerned about her welfare in all the time Bruce has been gone. Why haven't you looked for her, Alfred? Dick? Babs? Anyone?

Maybe they didn't mention her because they didn't consider her to be lost?

Like a cousin or sister that moved away for a job or something, so it wouldn't be necessary to talk about her all the time, especially as they said that Tim was in constant contact with her.

Except the last time she pulled a disappearing act she came back all evil with a different personality as a super villain under Deathstroke's control. Considering that, if they really cared about her (which we see no evidence of since they haven't even mentioned her in the last year) they would be more diligent.

Yeah, it kinda strikes me as the whole, "Stephanie wasn't dead, Leslie didn't kill her, they've just been hanging out in Africa this whole time and Bruce knew about it" thing--we know that wasn't their original intent, per se, but it's nice that they were listening and did something about it.

But-so, basically, Cass' only "job" to fulfill was to vacate her current role just so Stephanie could have it? What?He couldn't have "tested Stephanie" without making Cass leave her family and the best home she's known? He couldn't have helped Steph without isolating Cass?

As someone said above, the only interpretation that makes this ok was that Cass was doing this for Steph, her best friend (despite the fact that Steph didn't even try to check up on her, for safety's sake?). Man, this is such a difference from Stephanie saying, "I refuse to give up being Batgirl." I know Cass is dedicated to the idea of the Bat, but surely she's now that loyal that she'd just drop the personna which helped her get on track with her life as soon as Bruce ordered her too. As Stephanie said, he doesn't have the right to take being Batgirl away from her, Bat-symbol or not.

Nice try, but this reeks of bad writing trying to cover bad writing. How did the writer get Steph so right and Cass so wrong?

Presumably Cass is also off doing other important stuff.

That is to say, this way he has two strong bats (Cass and Steph) instead of one (Cass), and Cassandra's doing some Very Important Stuff that'll also be unveiled.

Ok, I could get that he's having Cass multi-tasking by vacating the position and doing her own thing, but he doesn't really say that she's also busy. He could have said, "I need Cassandra elsewhere and Stephanie needed to fill that spot and prove herself," or something that indicates better that Cass is doing the "Very Important Stuff."

But I'm picky about writing, even (especially?) if it surrounds Cass' disappearance/return.

well, for one thing Cass' history makes her damn near impossible to do right. And I imagine it'd be more like "I need you to do this stuff for me, as Cassandra, so since you'll be gone you should leave the Batgirl costume for Stephanie.
