But you also live in a universe where time travel is possible. Why doesn't Bruce just go back and reroute the walk home?

Same reason why Barbara Gordon doesn't want to get out of the chair. Because the writers wrote them into a universe of bull**** that they can't escape without looking dumb in some way or another.

It's like Star Trek and time travel. The crew have demonstrated the ability to time travel by simply flinging around the sun, but every other time when things look down (Like when Vulcan is destroyed and Prime Spock doesn't seem to care) they don't do it. They've put these characters into stupid situations that no one can give any believable explanation as to why they don't do what they do, because they need their plot devices, or in this case, the gimp characters.
