Who's the most ass-kicking-est DC woman? The Finals!

It's the final round of the tournament and two favorites are facing off to decide who is the most kick ass woman in DC. You can vote in today's poll here.
In one corner, Oracle, the information heartbeat for the DCU:

And in the other corner, Amazon warrior and avatar of truth.

Has to be Diana.

Barbara has to face down most of the Bat Rogues, and now and then Bruce himself when he's on a questionable moral dilemma.

Diana has to face her very gods who made her now and then, as well as the people who look up to her, and make it work. And she does it with grace.

I... this is really hard. I ended up voting for Barbara, but it's not really a comparison. Babs made herself Oracle under circumstances that would have made ordinary people give up; Diana freaking blinded herself to fight Medusa, and won. I'll be happy whoever wins, they both kick arse.

IIRC Athena gave her the eyes of a goddess after rescuing Mercury from Hades.

...but Barbara did give up. She gave up the title, costume and settled down to a simple position of working in front of the computer for the supportive role. She gave up.

To say Oracle performs 'the supportive' role is to reduce superhero-ing to running around rooftops alone.
supergirl: (Default)

dude, what

[personal profile] supergirl 2010-11-01 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
She was shot in the spine and paralyzed. Gotham rooftops aren't exactly well known for being wheelchair accessible, so Babs summoned some serious initiative and took on a new role of Badass Administrator instead. Can you see Superman dedicating a weekend to managing the JLA's various accounts and setting up ten thousand firewalls to protect their anonymity? She manages a network of superheroes and can send a Green Lantern to freakin' Japan to pick up sushi at the drop of a hat. She also still periodically beats up ninjas while still in her chair and trained her two replacements.

Yeah, man. Totally sounds like a chick who gave up doing good for the world just because she can't walk.

Tough call, but it's Babs for me. She went out there with no special skills or powers, kicked some major buttock and continues to do so. While Diana is admirable in all sorts of ways, but the fact that Babs started with nothing - no special powers, no super strength, no invulnerability, no real support or backup or technological advantages... that kinda puts her in a class alone in this fight, IMHO.

But either way, there's no loser in this fight.

This is very alpha-centric, and I believe demonstrably incorrect.

Diana. Babs' heroism is very human. But this is comics.

Demonstrably incorrect? We're in a universe with Super heroes, people who can fly by just pointing their hands in front of them and making a tiny leap. We've got blessings from the Gods, machines that can empower individuals, we have time travel, we have dimensional leaps, and most importantly, we have resurrection!

With all of that, and much much more, she's still in that goddang wheelchair. Every story I've read is always the same. "I'm in a wheel chair because I was shot. That's tragic." NO IT IS NOT TRAGIC because she's just not doing anything to fix it. Black Adam gave his wife's brother, a man who was beaten and could no longer walk part of his power that enabled him to not only walk, but fly. You cannot put Babs in a universe like that and keep her in a wheelchair in any realistic manner unless she's so stuck up that she doesn't want to walk again, in which case I wouldn't even bother putting her on this list at all.

You're arguing directly with comics logic here -- yeah, she and Professor X should not be in wheelchairs, and Sue Dibny and Ted Kord should be alive, and somebody should have been able to save Aunt May, and etc. There's no point in following this logic because the answer is obvious:

She's a character, being in a wheelchair makes her interesting, and until someone writes a story that gets her out of the wheelchair and makes it better than the story that put her in it she will stay there.

That seems to be your entire point, right? Am I missing anything?

Sorry Babs, but I have to go with Diana. But good luck in the Midterm Congressionals tomorrow! (Oh wait, that was retconned)

Dude, just...don't. You can't win this argument. You'll only drive yourself nuts. It's not logical, it's not reasonable, it's not even in-character up until seven or so years ago, but it's the way it is now. According to Morrison's timeline, Bab's is going to be in a wheelchair twenty years from now when Damian Wayne is Batman. Let people who can't think the compound problems of it all through have their fun, and invest in another character who's not as backwards.

I suggest: Vriska Serket or Kimiko Ross.

I wanted to vote for Babs but in the end, voted for Wonder Woman but it doesn't really matter. I think we can all agree they are both kickass in a different manner, and trying to agree which one is more just doesn't work out, because they both face different threats and resolve them differently. How would Babs react if she got Diana's powers? How would Diana act if she was put in Barbara's possition? I don't know and it doesn't matter.

For me, they are both winners.
